Phil's Wild West Tour. Day by day reports

Day One
Alta, UT
3.3.08

I was given grief that I would spend the first 5 days at Solitude. Not the case, the first day we headed over to Alta. Other than weekend crowds on a Monday, skiing was great. We were there with a bunch of Divas and we had a blast. Skied and hiked pretty much everywhere. I forgot how big Alta actually was. Pics are over on facebook, too lazy to put them here.

Day 2
Solitude, UT
3.4.08

We had buckle deep fresh powder today. About 3" of fresh dropped to cover up the already deep base. I haven't skied Solitude in a number of years and to was good to get back. Uphill capacity is not the fastest, but they really don't get the crowds. Climbergirl from Diva's, a guide from Solitude toured us around in the AM. In the afternoon a few of us found some nice pockets of snow in the trees.

TC - I suspect this gets a tad complicated. Phil is in control of the camera so he's gotta turn it over to someone to get pics of HIM to post.
Except for pics of family, the pics need to be posted on the other site, which.... well, you know the rules. LolaPug will have to do that !

Phil, what's up with this ? It's winter, there is snow, there is skiing, & resting up from skiing. If I want to read/see about your week I have to join FACE BOOK ? And what is Flickr ?? I've just mastered multi quote on Epic. There is no time for learning new sites & intricacies when snow & skiing are to be had ! Post up buddy ! You have my permission to post any FLATTERING pic of me (if there is one), dunno about the rest of the group, but I'll bet there will be at least 1 ok for at least 1 photo ? Seems to me there was some type of signed confidentiality form involved in all this ?? I know you Eastcoasters can be pretty "brief" as they say, but how about a brief ? Someone who may remain unnamed (TC) called this a "lame" TR. You gonna let her get away with that ? :

What a great trip! Anyone who doesn't think women can ski should see the women of TheSkiDiva rippin' it up in Utah. And the Diva Dudes (this includes PhilPug)-- well, the name says it all.

I'll pick up where Phil left off: Day 3 is another Solitude day. Man, this place is seriously empty during the week! The weather is a mixture of snow squalls and blue skies. Some of the Divas left yesterday, so today was kind of a mid-week, ski the groomers, take it easy day (at least for me!).

As a New England skier (translation: embrace the hard pack), this has been a whole different animal. My first runs down the 12 inches of new powder on Sunday were less than spectacular. Took some getting used to. I mean, I've skied out west before, but my trips here are few and far between. Each time it takes some getting used to.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that moguls in Utah should have a different name than moguls in the east? I mean, here they're big piles of fluffy stuff that are almost fun to fall in. In Vermont, they're hard boulders separated by unforgiving icy troughs. Anyone? :

aaaah, bumped up snow that you can blast through ? I mean, like it snows a few inches almost every day, what else could it be ? Oh yeah, you misssed that real mogul area/actual set up harder snow off Supreme in Alta didn't you ? You went off the edge : before that if I recall.

I always that I don't ski "bumps" anymore....but the stuff that fluffed up at Berkshire East on Sunday I couldn't get enuff of.

If I ever get out west I might ski bumps again:

Good call.

Even if you don't have facebook, you should be able to view the album.

This is a compilation of Photos from Day 1 at Alta. Excuse the commentary, Steve and Bong have been spared so far. Days 2-3, have not been put up yet as they are mostly pictures of people skiing. Hopefully Phil will have those up on Flickr.

Photos!

I <3 Solitude.

What a great hill. Great terrain. No crowds. Inexpensive lift tickets. Great backcountry access.

I really like the lift ticket option of buying a certain amount of lift rides to the top instead of a standard day use ticket.

You can bang out a couple of laps on the groomers and then head out the gates for a tour. It's pretty easy to make $50 last a few days.

My View of that Chute, from the top:

My View from the Bottom:
(If you can see the large oblong S in about the middle of the bowl, those are my tracks)

I thought the same thing. I don't suck nearly as bad on those big wide soft Utah moguls.
The problem is your perspective! They are moguls out west, back east, they're just ice pillars.
yup. Moguls are made of snow out there. They are soft and schmushable

Thanks for the pics ...
