Yeah, he rips alright. I really like the way he constantly drives his tips right back down into the snow when he's in the bumps.

great skiing, reminds me of nick herrin on the d team... bouncy, quick feet, instinctive, supple ankles and that diving tip/shovel engagement.

He is working privates only out of Aspen Highlands. didnt make the demo team because there is unwritten rule you cant be 19 and make it.

FYI rielly has taught me pivot slips before and coached me how to make them better for bump skiing

yep upper and lower body separation, counter rotation, also a clean edge change and using a flat ski.

My guess would be because every time you pivot from across the fall-line to into the fall-line, the skis (and boots) tip down the hill and accelerate, and we need to go too.

Edit: Or pull the feet back under us, depending on our point of view.

Well the "tip dive" which is a key move for good bump skiing, is created with proper fore/aft balance, but namely an ankle extension as a persons feet pass the crest of the bump. Now to pull it off, and not end up in the toilet, you need your COM aligned over your BOS at the crest....from here, you can extend the ankle...knee and hip and drive the ski tips into the snow to maintain contact, and develop early edging....

Now the pivot slip, is really just a turn with no edging present...hence the ""look of the exercise is classic pivot slip" but the focus is on proper extension moves of the ankle timed with where your skis are relative to the fallline. The reason I use a pivot slip, is I find many skiers when trying to ski aggressivley instantly think "drive the shin into the boot"...this is the exact opposite of what they need to do in that situation...the shin drive happens...but only AFTER the skis hook up....hence the pivot slip takes the performance out it completly and allows the skier to focus on which is often a new movment pattern....

If you look at this video...and compare Dchan's ankle extension at the top of the turn to Reilly's you will notice a big diffference. I realies dcahn is on much smaller bumps, but that doesnt matter....you do the same move on groomed.

Hence with a skier like this, hopefully you can see how doing simple exercise like pivot slips, with the focus on flexion/extension could be a valuable way to introduce a new movement...then add in the performance.

I played around with dropping the tips. I was not able to get a significant tip drop of by opening the ankle. What am I missing?

Hip extension. Activation of the glutes and hamstrings. I like to feel the ankle getting the movement started with the hips joining in to bring it home. This can happen without the knees changing position much, though the knees don't need to and probably shouldn't remain static of course.

I'm with RicB on this one. well explained in one sentence. To have that extension avail, I also think this works best if you're coming from the flexed position of the previous absorbion.

I think to think about "extending into the troughs" instead of "absorbing over the bumps". And yea, drive your pelvis forward as you crest the bump to help drive your legs down into it. Open your ankles at the same time.

tip drive / open ankles

I think the video is good skiing.
For driving the tips down the backsides of the moguls,

Right around 1:25 the camera angle is heads on and you can see the
bumps being "swallowed", include a large amount by the ankles.

One of the drills this skiers advocates is a travere a mogul field and aim to keep our tips on the snow (pretty much) all the time. Involves a fair bit of fore/aft adjustments. While the tips may leave the snow simply due to the geometry of the mogul, they should not be "launched" and have most of the ski come off the snow.

Extension and tip drive were taught much more than absorption with the knees coming quite a ways toward the chest.

Yup...totally agree. The only word of caution I would point out is that when extending the hip it is important to do it such that the thighs drop...rather then allowing the shoulders to come up and back...solid fore/aft positioning at the top of the bump...and timing...is the key.

I think the traverse exercise pointed out by BtS is a good one. Trick is do to it at "skiing speed"...I think most people do this one too slow....start slow..sure...but build up to skiing speed before trying it for real.

That's a wise caution Dude, and effective application clearly shows in the stills of Rielly that Max posted.
