Jay Peak President's Week

The old New England Thaw/Freeze cycle was timed to vacation week. Just when conditions were at their best - rain and warm temps followed by a deep freeze was on tap last week.

Monday: No rain in the morning and warm temps made for a fun day of spring conditions. We skied in the glades mostly and some bumpers too. Everything was soft bumps. rain started again after lunch and we skied for a wet hour before packing it in.

Tuesday: Rock-hard "teethchattering crud" as was scrawled on a whiteboard at the top of the jet triple. After the rain, maybe an inch of snow blew in which turned what would have been survival skiing into just plain unpleasant skiing. My son only lasted 3 runs. I sharpend the edges and hit some icy groomers for a couple of hours.

Wednesday: Woke up to 4" of light & dry, would have preferred something denser. It was enough to make the groomers nice and the trees crunchy still, yet more skiable. We skied some bump runs too. You really had to be on it because underneath the bit of fluff it was a slick, still rock hard surface.

Thursday: a little more skied off and a little colder than Wednesday.

Friday: We took he day off and just hung around. It snowed lightly all day and into the evening.

Saturday: A total of maybe 4" of very light fluff. We got out early to beat any weekend crowds. Groomers were actually very nice with the best conditions of the week. Glades were still scratchy but we did find a few spots of 6-8" fluff. We skied hard and packed it in around 1 for the drive home.

We were planning to take a powder/glades clinic on the first day, but, with the conditions and the fact that there were no lift lines to cut we didn't bother. We were also planning on hooking up with Jaypowhound for some face tours and video shooting but with The Face being closed and the absence of pow, we never got around to it.

I did take a helmet cam out for one run on Saturday. Here is a very short video going up the Bon Adventure chair and coming down the top of Can Am and into Showoff Glade.

All in all it was not one of our better ski trips. One big positive is that my son's skiing really improved. He was actively seeking out the trees and bumps and skiing good, agressive lines. He often beat me down steeper terrain. Last year he would have had trouble in the bumps and would have sought out more groomers over skiing all natural terrain. I think we'll look into Utah for next Feb. vacation.
