Kicking Horse, Fernie, LL Report Needed!

Nobody is better at picking the most unlikely low point in conditions than me. Or so it seems from 2,237 miles away.

Seven of us are leaving for Golden BC on Friday for three days skiing at KH with a possible day trip to LL or Revelstoke in search of some softer/deeper snow if possible.

Then next Wed-Friday we plan to be in Fernie for three more days.

I'm just guessing but it looks like following the early spring skiing season, we're just in time for the big refreeze and will get to enjoy mostly groomed dust on crust with little possibility for off-piste or tree skiing unless we get real lucky, which does not appear to be in the forecast at this point.

Can anybody dispell my vision of dust on crust? How is the skiing at LL and Sunshine? Would those be better than Fernie at this point since they probably didn't get the big warmup/re-freeze. It looks like it will be cold again next week with little sun so I'd love to hear that somebody still has some soft packed powder skiing.

We're going to have a great trip regardless of conditions since we're looking forward to just getting away and taking in some spectacular scenery but right now I'm trying to figure out if, in addition to my 82mm mid-fats, whether my 2nd pair of skis will be the hopeful powder skis or the GS or SL race ski variety.

Any info/predictions will be greatly appreciated. Don't feel bad about giving us the straight scoop on conditions. We'll just bring extra bottles of scotch.

Bump. Anybody?
Looks like the forecast for snow is improving. Yip yip yooey.
Still, I haven't seen any reports on BC conditions in quite a while. What happened?

Dust? What dust?

The crust is nice and thick though.

Please thank your parole officer for letting you on the computer to get that all out to me.

We don't have parole officers in Canada. There is very little crime.

We do have a lot of hard packed snow however.

I think Fernie is going to get nailed by this next storm coming in Saturdayish. Check out a Sat.Rad. shot of the Pacific.

Looks to me like Red may get hit too. They are starting to say 6-12" in the Mountains of Northwest Montana and Fernie is just a few mile across the boarder, we usually get what they get and vis versa.

And, since you're gonna be there for a week, it looks like the next storm way out in the Pacific is even bigger, in fact, it looks like a monster.

Maybe, I'm being optimistic, but what else do I have to look forward to.

Sorry. Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough last time. I reallly just wanted to say Thanks for all of that. You shouldn't have. What happened - somebody run out of matches? Get back inside or you're going to miss something.

It rained all afternoon.

I'll let you know if I see anything else that help you enjoy your brief reprieve from Long Island.

Alright, that's a little better reporting! Although it's worse weather wise. Bummer. Well it does look like we could get possibly 10+ inches of snow by Monday at Kicking Horse anyhow. ::

Seems like the weather is tracking in from the Northwest and petering out towards Fernie. Did it rain up on the mountain as well, or just at lower elevations?

We're going to have to make a backup plan, if possible, to stay in the northland if that keeps up.

By far the best Fernie reports are here:

http://far.redtree.com/cgmrep.html

We are a world class location for precipitation. Nothing ever "peters out toward Fernie" Sometimes it is more liquid than we would prefer. Feel free to send me a pm for current details. Town might not resemble conditions on the white pass lift.

Griz days are coming, sort of an Ullarfest. It usually snows.

It hasn't snowed for 12 days in Fernie. Not that I'm counting each day or anything. Didn't even spot the rain this afternoon, though I've been hiding in bed with a monster hangover...

Couple of moderate dumps scheduled for the next week. I've skied Sunshine a few times in the last week and it has been OK, but we really need a spring storm. Revelstoke is worth a day if the skiing is iffy at the Horse, it is about 90 minutes from Golden.

Snow-forecast.com calls for the following totals for Revelstoke lift top:

Feb 29-March 1 23 cm

March 2-4 44 cm

March 6-8 24 cm

Might just be worth a trip from Golden.

I'm booked to be in Fernie this coming week and a snowcat day on wendsday with Fernie wilderness adventures. the weather network is only calling for minimal snow 1-4cm from monday to friday, do you think they will get more snow at higher elavations, or is still to early to tell for next?

Probably not, it's more likely that the 1-4 will fall at the top and it'll rain at the bottom...

I'm coming in sunday from Montreal and staying the whole week, what kind of conditions can I expect now that I'm surly not going to find powder?
How will it be cat skiing?

Thanks
Pasquale
