How many do you REALLY need? None. Rent a set of demos to suit the daily conditions. When you add up everything, its darn near as cheap as buying and maintaining a couple sets, and way less hassle if you travel on planes a lot.
I did this for a couple years, and got to try out many different things... it's great! Eventually I bought a set of my all-around favourites, but still demo for those days I wanna rip (GS racers), the pow is particularly deep and snarly (fats), or its been cold and hasn't snowed for a week (Bauer's from the rink).
However I'm not positive the cost comes out even when you can get great pre-season and post-season deals.
Locally I bring just one pair of skis because you get a pretty accurate report of conditions. When I travel I bring both pairs. I'd hate to run into some knee deep pow and not have my Chubbs with me.
