How to carry 2 additional sets of skis up the mountain?

After realizing that maybe I didnt bring the right skis for NASTAR racing this past weekend (but I did qualify for the Nationals), this in spite of having all my skis back at the condo, I thought it would be great to bring all three sets to the race hill and go through them until I find the ones perfect for the course.

So, is there anything out there that would enable me to carry two sets of skis (while on the lift) in addition the the ones on my feet?

I have never seen a racer carrying two pair to the start.

My suggestion: Carry as many pairs as you want to the ski watch/locker/locked rack closest to the race lift. Wear an "inspection" pair that you do not plan to race on up to the course, look at it a few times and get an idea of which ski you want to race on.

You have two hands right?

We would carry one-two pairs to the top for a race and choose the best wax set-up. Snow and conditions are often very different at the top versus the bottom. Put you hands throught the ski ploe straps and let them dangle then put one set of skis on each shoulder. Just makes sure the tails clear the charlift.

It's a NASTAR course, right?

I'd go with one pair of skis. For speed events, since I know what the venues are, I'll decide, in advance whether I want a 195, 201, 204 or 212 Atomic, and I have backups in all those lengths. For speed events, I'll always have a warmup pair and a race pair on race day.

For GS, it's always 183 Head IGS RD. Some races I'll just go with one pair and spray on some Toko Helix or similar before the start, others I'll have a pair of race skis and a pair of warm up skis. One thing I always do, however, if I'm bringing a race pair is strap them up with some base protectors. Swix makes them and so do a bunch of other people. They do keep the base Betty-ed up until the start, and they also keep the bundle strapped together so it's easier to carry...

LOL.

Seriously Rich, you are a strong guy. I like to put the skis over my shoulders and just sit down on the chair. Real simple. Although if I see someone bringing three pair of skis to a NASTAR course, I reserve the right to heckle.

+1

I've done one pair on feet, with two pair of DH skis over the shoulders before. It takes some body english to negotiate the chair, but that's about it.

What about the NASTAR groupies?

Seriously though, I've been known to trot to the truck after shadowing the course and changing boards at the last minute. That only works if you are way down the list and parked close. You might also just leave a different set up locked up at the base ready to be stolen, I mean go..
:

I'm glad you are making the most if it. Best of luck to you..:

this is a stupid question from a non-racer, but i guess you have to get the skis down the mtn too, how are you going to do that?

Same way you got them up there.

And given a choice, I'll carry two pair of skis before one full gate bag any day.

If the 12 year olds on my team can do it, and they do, I'm guessing Richie-Rich can manage it as well.

This old freedogger remembers hearing the racers griping when rapid gates came out. My racer friend told me the coach handed him the bag and said "you guys are really gonna love these". For those born after 1980, the bamboo gates were only about half as heavy as rapid gates..

I can't imagine a more glorious time to be racing slalom than when the gates evolved. I bet that was fun.

Hey Samari, I noticed in one of your posts that you are a former gopher way back, when and where? I lived in Burnsville from 1974 thru 1982

I qualified, too, but it's too close to an already-planned trip to Utah over Easter weekend. There just aren't enough days to give.

And my qualification was on a lark: I ran the NASTAR course at Loon as part of my testing of the new skis. Funny how coincidence happens, sometimes.

In MN until '94. Grew up skiing at Wild, Afton and Welch. Raced High School Slalom for Mounds View. (Go Green and White!)

Wild Mountain has the best french fries in the world.

Especially for a guy like me, who never really learned to ski around the bamboo kind. Really revolutionized my skiing. Actually started finishing runs.

I qualified last year, and just wasn't as interested in going there as I was in my trip to Kton wit Da Bears!
