Haines, AK Heli-skiing, anyone been?

Anyone on here been Heli-skiing out of Haines, Alaska? Did a little searching in the archives & didn't come up with anything.

I was supposed to do this trip last year, but plans fell through. Low & behold I get an email from my old ski buddy & business partner last week & it's on! Our group will be arriving in Juneau on 3/19 for a week with "Sean Dog" for a week of Heli-skiing. Does anyone know about this outfit? My friends have been with these guys a number of times, but it is a first for me. Any insights or links would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JF

Alaska Heliskiing used to be Alaskan Heli Adventures. (IIRC) It's the same outfit.

Sean was an instructor in my American Avalanche Institute Level III Avalanche Awareness Course for Heli Guides back in 2001 in Girdwood with cooperation with Chugach Powder Guides. Kevin Quinn, owner and guide for Points North was also in that course, as a student, not a teacher.

I personally sent Sean a resume after my course in hopes of becoming an intern. He was interested, but the next year my interest faded. It appears that he has continued the Avi-classes and guiding courses that AAI has since stopped doing in AK.

He's old school and was around before the cowboys (Coombs, Cummins, Hamre) arrived. There are other heli opsthat are worthy of much more scrutiny than Sean's. He was legit when I studied under him 7 years ago. I wouldn't hesitate to fly with him today. I remember him being wary of new snow, wary of unneccesary risks, and dealing with the deaths of many prominent industry professionals that year. (it was the worst year on record- it rewrote the avi text books's standard rules that these instructors wrote.) The instructors of that course were the world's elite, and they got scared that year. A scared veteran is worthy of guidance, imo.

PM me for outfits I'd be wary of due to safety records, past accidents and helicopter storage and leasing- if interested. There are a few ops that I would never consider flying with. But, I'm no AK-savvy-know-it-all either.

Thanks for the response Samurai. This is the kind of reassurance I was looking for. Have you been up there in recent years? Also, we may try & ski out of Juneau the first day, probably with an outfit called "Above & Beyond Alaska/Chilkat" if conditions permit. Do yo know anything about them? What about Eaglecrest ski area for down days?

Thanks,

JF
