The 2009 Gathering Poll (officially flawed) - Page 6

Poll Results: Where should the 2009 Gathering be held?

  • 29% (28)
Some combo of the usual SLC resorts (eg LCC, BCC, etc)
  • 35% (34)
Jackson Hole + Targhee + maybe Snow King
  • 23% (23)
The mega SLC + Jackson combo tour
  • 11% (11)
This poll is flawed. My better suggestion is below
96 Total Votes

How many people showed up at Fernie?
Does it matter what the ability of the skier is? I would really like to get to JH..I was thinking about going to one of their camps, but am not sure if I can get away for that long..I am probably a level 6-7

'bout 15-18 as I recall; vs maybe 10-12 at the first one. But others might have a clearer recollection. Been almost 7 yrs ago.

Not really. All are welcome. There were two level 5 or so at the last gathering and a few probably level 7 that showed that skied a bit slower than their ability due to existing injury and/or snow conditions.

The only problem that may arise is if a level 6 or so is confronted with last years conditions (about 6' new snow in 5 days), and is not used to skiing powder.

It is my hope that we can return to the time honored tradition of voting at The Gathering on where to go next season.

Polls close in 5 days.
How about that drive down LCC? What would usually take 30 minutes took over 1:15. 4WD, 1st gear, and white knuckles the entire way.

Then, once I got down to the mouth of the canyon, I had to drop off BWPA up at his house. BWPA's driveway made LCC seem easy. I think my truck was the biggest truck up there the entire season.

Gawd I effin loved the bad weather last year that week. Unreal conditions I dunno how to explain it. And I've been going out there for a while but nothing compared to the deep white snow we had every frikkin day. I just wished I stayed another week ....

Here's to bad weather again this year!

4 days till the polls close.

Gary, good seeing you back here. I'm lobbying to bring the gathering to the Skiing Mecca of the Midwest (aka Perfect North) but not having too much success yet

A big hello to SC and UL,
Ah, Perfect North is certainly within driving distance and they do make snow and . . .
In spite of all the positives, the terrain is probably a little to much so maybe we should just stick with JH or SLC. Tough choice though.

3-2-1- Go

Boys and Girls......it's Jackson.

By popular demand it's the Jackson / Targee / maybe Snowking tour for the 08/09 official Epic Ski Gathering.

The dates will be Feb 7 - 11, 2009.

Based on my PMs with the local experts in the area, we came up with the following days to ski each area.

Sat.- Targee

Sun.- Targee or Snowking (we can all discuss this one....or split into two groups)

Mon.- Jackson
Tue.- Jackson
Wed.-Jackson

The thinking on this was less crowds on the weekend at Targee or Snowking than Jackson.

The event is longer than last season by one day. I'm sure many will make a week of it by arriving on Friday night or Saturday and staying till the following weekend. Those that linger should have folks to ski with following the "Official" event, should they wish to. I'd like to suggest we all lunch together (or beer together) on Tuesday and reinstate the tradition of deciding on where and when to go in 09/10. (I'm personally trying to retire from Gathering organizing.......I just want to ski at them)

I'll be starting an Official Gathering Thread within the next week. It should contain a wealth of information about tickets, lodging, times and meeting places, etc. etc. etc. Those of you who wish to get right on your reservations now, follow the first link that Bob Peters posted earlier in this thread. The prices are good and the site is pretty user friendly.

Let's hope for a little less snow than last year (I'm kidding).

So get ready.....we got a new tram to play on and an awesome area to explore.

See you all in Jackson Hole in February.

WOOT!

Can we discuss the first two days? Snow King would be closer (than Targhee) to where most of us
are staying, right? Would it make sense to do Snow King Sat. and Targhee Sun? Snow King would be a good first day warm up and let everybody recover from travel.

Or just do Targhee/Targhee and anybody that wants to do Snow King can fit it in wherever (or go on Sunday) since that probably won't be the popular spot. Only due to lack of time for most of us. I know Dookey is hot on Snow King and I would love to try it out but when I am there for only 5-6 days I want to maximize and ski the "big mountains" as much as possible. Same reason I didn't do a day at Brighton vs. Alta/Snowbird last year.

Thanks to Uncle Louie for all his hard work.

I'll start getting info together for "The Cultural Hub of the Universe" (a.k.a., Driggs, Idaho) and will post it soon.

If someone needs info right now due to lodging/flights issues, let me know and I can probably help.

Sure thing....I'm willing to flip the first two days. You are right Matt. It may be easier to stay near the town of Jackson for the first day. Those flying in Friday night or Sat AM can still get out and find us all.
What I could use from those of you who have been to all these ski areas is a couple of easy to find meeting spots (inside) for the AM.

I, like probably several others, have never been to this area of the country. I'm sure for those who have NEVER met any other Bears, it would be easier to locate everybody.

Post here or shoot me a PM and I'll add the meeting places (and times) to the OFFICIAL thread when I start it.

Thanks,

UL

looking for a couch....

i cook and clean and provide endless entertainment in terms of storytelling genius.

oh yeah, i heart Snowking and would suggest that for at least a full day...there's plenty there to keep hardcore shred heads amused, plus a ticket is good for both day and night skiing. The OB stuff is easy to access and allows for some decent chuting and picturesque views of the valley.

also, when JH is on wind-hold, SK is invariably spinning proper. just an FYI on that, even though i shouldn't be divulging such info...

JH Gathering

Haven't been to JH in winter.

Where should I book room? Teton Village, Jackson ? Good price found in teton. So far with me are 2 others for a total of 3 and may find someone else.

Wanted to reserve now and really didn't know if/where to stay. Help Please

If you really need to jump now, follow the first link that Bob Peters posted about 3 pages back in this thread. I think he actually answered you originally.

but.....

If you wait a week you may save yourself a little time searching. I am doing my homework on this and Harken Banks is also. Adipose also had suggestions, and Bob Peters already posted a few links. Give us a week to get our collective heads around this and you may get better results. Reservations are slow right now in ski country.

I was considering getting UL into some kind of therapy group or a xx-step program, but perhaps this offer is the better option?

Don't forget the fried pickles! Man, I like those things - though it's been a few years.

Also, it'd probably be worth scoping out whether or not it makes sense for most folks to do the Targhee Express from Jackson. But then no fried pickles...

I can attest to this and feel as though I still owe dookey67 a price of admission for the entertaining dinner we enjoyed with him.
Where shall I send the check?

the only way I can afford to be in Jackson Hole is working there, or someone else nearby.
