so im going to be arriving in Utah wed nite and skiing thurs friday and saturday. it's my second trip out there and I couldnt be more stoked!!!! what are you utah guys predicting for those days? I see its snowing wed and thurs so will I be getting some good powder or what? I know I'm 100% hitting up alta and considering brighton and snowbasin but if alta is unreal we may just ski there for 3 days. so whats the good word? give me good news boys!!

I would pick 3 of the 4: Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, Snowbasin.

If you are an intermediate, go with Alta, Brighton, and Snowbasin.

If you are advanced/expert, go with Alta, Snowbird, and either one.

just to clarify for (hopeful) future replies, I'm an advanced/expert skier. besides which mountains are going to be best, could you Utah-ees give me some insight into what kind of snow I'm gonna be getting? I'm praying for some deep powder but I really have no idea considering the only info I have is it's supposed to snow Wed and Thurs. Thanks again!

advance/expert

1.Snowbird
2.Snowbasin
3.Alta
4.Solitude
5.Brighton
6.Powder Mountain

I can promise great snow and runs all day long at snowbird. Well if you have my mind leading you around.

I'm heading up solo on Thursday through Saturday as well. Advanced/expert skier, as well.

Hitting Deer Valley on Thursday (free ticket via Quick Start, hoping for some stashes to still be there), Snowbasin on Friday or Saturday. Thinking about Alta or Snowbird for the other day. PM me if you want to meet up.

Whatever you do DO NOT go to Solitude. That place sucks. Really crowded, hard to find your way around and they only get like 1/3 of the snow that AltaBird gets.

I kind of sense the sarcasm @ Solitude, but I will say it seems to have been found out moreso since the last time I was there. Then again it was Saturday ....

If you get the chance get up to Snowbasin ... one of the best days up there for me last week - waist deep at minimum. Plus the little gondies keep you warm and the lodges are indescribable.

I like Snowbasin. I'm crashing for free at a friend's house in Kaysville anyway.

Okay, plans are set. Snowbasin on Saturday, which opens up Alta/Snowbird/Solitude for Friday. PM if you want to make some turns.

Alta may be a go for Friday. Depends on what's been opened on Thursday and what's on avi hold... on the other hand Pow Mow may be the ticket- check snow reports and also maybe someone will post an update. Sorry I missed you guys last week. Got snowed in.

to clarify- other than say you shouda been here last week- I have a friend coming in from the east this weekend and I'm thinking of where the pow will be. Check Alta's website, go to weather and snow report- that's got a lot of info right there. Bushwhacker at Snowbird is a sure bet- he teaches there- put him to work and he'll find it for you. If he's free skiing, he'll put you to work. There are places at PCMR and Canyons that may have been on Avi hold, ditto Snowbasin, Solitude and Brighton. The Cottonwoods generally get more snow and are higher. Check websites for snow totals. Call around. Be lucky.

yeah and just as an fyi - the 511 or UTA travel number is WAAAAAY late many times for when the canyon road opens (OK maybe only by 30-45 minutes, but that can be the difference). Anyway, if you call the Snowbird number you get an actual person and I find that information was much more timely. The days we went to SB and Alta the road was closed for a while and the travel number claimed it was still closed after they had already opened the gate.

It's a tough problem to have but when there's too much snow like there was last few weeks the road openings can curtail your skiing by an hour or even a half day. Either get up like Lonnie and crew at 4 and brave the road before closing, or have some alternative plans for Powmow/SB/PC ready.

It seems petty and maybe my east coast attitude coming through ... but losing a half day on a vacation is major impact - specially on a pow day !

It's rare for it to be closed past 10am ( at least from my experience ) let alone half a day. And on the days I've waited until 10AM to make it up the canyon, there's still TONS of untracked to track up. Personally, I don't know what would be worse, getting up at 4AM to make sure you make it up the canyon before they close it, or wait in line at the bottom of the canyon for 45 minutes or an hour at 8:30AM. ( Well, maybe I do, I've never gotten up at 4AM to drive up the canyon. )

IMHO, it's much more important to be at the top of little cloud when they open road to provo ( which many times doesn't happen until after lunch ).

well I'm back from the trip and it was insane!!! Thursday we skied Alta in that crazy storm but were forced off the mountain at 3 because another avi had fallen on the road so after they cleared it any1 that wasnt staying at Alta had to go. Went back the next day blue skies 40* knee-waist deep powder. It was the best day of skiing I've ever had, it was unreal!! Skied all over, favorite run was probably coming off the colling lift going around the back going through the gates on the traverse went to another area and dropped into some steep waist deep stuff. Then had to ski a tight chute and some trees to get back to the sugarloaf lift. 3rd day we skied Brighton, did a bunch of runs off the Millison chair and skied some trees. Solid day there as well. Amazing trip overall!!
