Steep & Cheap rant #23,575

I am an admitted S&C junkie. I would like to know if their demographics have shifted in the past year or so. It seems like every other item is: Board Shorts, Head Lamps, and Reef Sandles. WTH! Are they marketing to a bunch of CHUDS and mole-men that vacation in the Bahamas?

Consider this a warning. As of today I am no longer checking or receiving alerts from S&C. The $99 Public Enemies, and $79.95 Duke bindings will now be abundant.

Uhhh...???

It's a close-out site, they sell off-season items at a huge discount (summer stuff in winter/ winter stuff in summer). What part of that don't you understand?

The part about what the hell reef sandles have to do with steep?????? Maybe they should sell Jimmy Buffet cd's also.

"Steep" = markdown amount, not the place where you can use their stuff sold at discount.

Please try checking the whole site of Backcountry.com and Tramdock.com to see what sorts of things they sell at SteepandCheap.com that don't have to do with "steep terrain."

You're welcome!

Ah baloney! S & C is a site where they dump the crap they couldn't dump in stores.

I checked for a year .... all the weird looking, odd sized ..... or they were sold out unless you got up at three in the morning.

So far I have picked up, sweet shades, sweet flip flops and sweet skis all for great prices.

I must say that they havn't had many of the things I want lately. I still check it quite often. You never know when you might get a deal on something you can't live without. I am about tired of all the Oakley crap they have had on recently.

Funny...where are all the Marker bindings??

I'm not sure if the stuff is crappier these days or if i'm less interested since I have bought so many of the stupid things in the past year (reef sandals, etc).

It seems like they used to sprinkle in more legit stuff (arcteryx, mountain hardware, etc) with the crap to keep me interested, and now it is just crap all day every day.

I only found out about SAC in November '06, and over the last year-and-a-bit I've bought from them:

1 Arc'teryx hybrid jacket
1 Arc'teryx hardshell pants
3 Arc'teryx softshell jackets
2 Arc'teryx fleece jackets
1 pair of K2 PEs
1 pair of Look PX12s
1 pair of crampons
1 ice axe
7 base layers
1 belay jacket
1 cragging pack
1 50-liter pack
1 +25 down mummy bag
1 pair of climbing shoes
1 headlamp
1 pair of trekking poles
6 carabiners

Pretty much all of the stuff is men's size medium.

Oh yeah...

5 t-shirts
2 jeans
1 Oakley board shorts

At least for me, they're livin' up to the "steep" part.

I do have to concur, however, that recently we've seen a glut of Oakley-branded clothing and shades. Perhaps this just means that Oakley is having a crappy year, and SAC is picking up steals from them.

DtEW just admitted to outfitting himself with the leftovers.

Leftover London broil is still London broil, and makes just as fine as a sandwich.

...Although in admittedly unattractive-sounding colors such as "Garbanzo" (khaki) and "Lead" (anthracite), which have got to be the strangest designer colors to be ever applied to climbing jackets.

Rob: "What color did you pick up that $80 Gamma SV in?"

Dave: "Lead."

(silence)

Ah ha, Atomic Snoop Daddies in 174cm just came on.
haha 07 Snoop Daddy's on SAC for 406.88.
Nice Ski, and a good deal but not as good as the deal Sierra Jim gave the Bears last spring.

SAC is geared towards people who buy things way ahead of time....so, they are selling spring stuff right now. They had mostly winter stuff from August onwards, and it tapered off in December.

However, maybe if you post something over on TGR about this, there will be enough responses and they'll throw some more winter stuff on there.

Hestra Gloves are on right now.
I've never used them but am told they are great.
