Utah Gathering Day 1 - Alta

I just had the best powder day of my life! We woke up at 4 AM to beat the road closure. Got up to the mountain for Interlodge and spent 3 hours waiting. I didn't mind as it was part of the adventure for me since I had never done that. When I saw Lonnie and Bushwacker pacing and staring out the window I knew we were in for an exceptionally good day!

When we finally dropped in for the first run I watched a few in the group go and instantly vanish in a cloud of fluff. I went and never felt the bottom. It may have been there but I didn't notice. Each run seemed to get better and deeper. A few runs into the day we hit a run that had rollers/ridges that held some pockets of chest deep snow. Skiing through chest deep powder was a whole different feeling than even the waist deep stuff. It was like a hug from Mother Nature. Face shots became face blasts. When you have to lift your arms up to head level to make pole plants you know it's deep.

I ran out of gas and bailed for the hike up to Catherine's and skied some tree runs below before heading in. Still just an amazing day! Thanks Lonnie for the most excellent guiding!

No pics yet. Video documentary coming soon from Lonnie....stayed tuned.

Agreed, especially since I'm here and nursing my wrenched knee in my hotel room. Maybe it's better I don't see what I missed yesterday: The good news is my knee is feeling much better and i should be ok for Snowbaisn tomorrow.

In a moment of stupidity I forgot to pack my charger for my camera and the battery died, so I am relying on the others. I didn't see many people stopping for pics though. It was just too good and low viz most of the day. Lonnie should be posting his video soon.

Day one teaser looks sweet. good job Lonnie, its never easy to pull the camera on a powder day. Looks like some good skiers to match the conditions.

Lonnie,

BWPA looks like he had a good time on the otherside of the mountain. Is that possible?

And it was damn difficult too, let me tell you!

(One of my fav shots of the whole deal is your slo mo faceshot....)

And this is the low rez version. MattL said he had some server space where I could put a higher rez version.
