I did both the 5:15 and 6 AM boot camp sessions today. This week is kind of a boot camp bonanza in defiance of where I was a year ago (halfway between injury and surgery, unable to walk without crutches). But when I saw those jump ropes come out, my first thought was that I had showed up for boot camp on the wrong day.
The circuit included 60 sec jump rope followed by 60 sec plank, 60 sec slam ball, push-ups and burpees in rapid rotational succession. This afforded me five 60 sec attempts on the jump rope during the first session and five more in the second session. My first four attempts were total bombs. On the 5th attempt, I managed to spin the rope around for 20 sec before it got tangled around my ankles.
During the second session, I managed to spin the jump rope on every attempt, sometimes for 30 sec or more before I had to stop and start again. That is about what I could do pre-injury. I was never a jump rope maestro and I never liked it very much. But the fact that I can do it again after more than a year is one more notch in my recovery belt, one more patch of lost ground that is now recaptured.
Treat this injury like a war, go to battle every day, and you will find reason to celebrate those numerous small victories.
