Deburring Edges

Here is the situation:

Recreational Skier, likes to go fast on the steep groomed runs, learning to blast through crud on ungroomed steeps (without moguls).

Just had a shop stone grined and edges sharpened..

skied on the skies two days.

Normal burrs and nicks to the edges forming...

Want to sharpen my own edges and wax to avoid the $20 a pop charge from the shop.

So my questions are, WHAT DO YOU USE TO FIRST DEBURR THE EDGES before sharpening and polishing the side edges?

A stone, if so what grit? A gummy stone?

Do you debur your base edges free hand with the stone?

Side edges do you deburr using your file/side edge guide?

Then after deburr, what is our shapening progression of choice? Remember I'm a recreational skiier.

Usually, I lightly, freehand a 180 grit aluminum oxide stone along both edges to feel and knock down burrs, along with hitting case hardened sections. If freehanding is intimidating, placing the stone in a guide is a good option. I don't use my diamonds initially because I feel like it'll make them last longer by hitting the rough spots first with a cheap stone.

After deburring, I'll use a 200 then a 400 grit diamond. All stones are used with lubrication (50/50 denatured alcohol & water) and cleaned frequently.

My .02

Nicks and burrs are a little diff.

Gummi for burrs. Burr is the slight bent over micro ragged edge produced by filing / sharpening.

For minor nicks and dings a 6 inch fine bastard mill cut file with guide is good for light touch ups that still require some edge material to be removed. For more major repairs, a bigger badder file may be called for.

I use a diamond stone in a guide before filling. 200 grit or thereabouts seems to do the trick. After filing I use a 200-ish and then a 400-ish grit diamond to polish followed by removing the burr (created by filing) with an Arkansas stone (freehand).
