RIP Billy. Prayers go out to him and his family.

One of the top names in the sport of extreme skiing was killed while filming a jump near the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon Tuesday.

Billy Poole was taken to University Hospital in extremely critical condition about 12:30 p.m. after attempting a jump and hitting rocks, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak. A hospital spokesman confirmed he died at 1:30 p.m.
Originally, the sheriff's office was notified of a skier injured in what appeared to be an avalanche.
Jaroscak did not know Tuesday afternoon from how far Poole jumped. The accident happened in the backcountry between Brighton and Solitude Ski resorts. The film crew Poole was with actually skied into Little Cottonwood Canyon after reaching their injured companion.
A medical helicopter transported Poole to the hospital. Poole was known for his long jumps. His bio on skibd.com says the Montana native, who lived in Alta, Utah, was the first person to jump over the telephone wires at Cardiff Pass

I took my time posting this because my heart aches when I see something like this. His skiing was inspirational, to say the least.
My thoughts and prayers go to his friends and family.

I drank beers with him at a party after opening day at Snowbowl this year (or so I'm told, I only vaguely remember the occasion). He grew up skiing at Snowbowl (which is part of why he was a badass skier).

We were just drinking to his memory tonight. It's sad.

Not to sound morbid, but does anyone know the exact cause for his death?

I know that much, but was it head trauma, internal injuries, blood loss...what?
The original reports out stated massive internal injuries. The first responders said he was "broken".

Again, these were some initial reports that I saw on the news. I have not actually seen/heard anything concrete.

He was an incredible skier and athlete. I've never had the opportunity to meet him, but everything written made him out to be a "good" guy.

I don't know the exact cause, but people on scene reported symptoms of massive internal hemorrhaging.

He was skiing with Jeremy Nobis and Jenn Berg, among others. Nobis was the first person to him.

RIP, Billy.

Very sad. I was staying out at Goldminer's last week. They had a memorial service in the bar for him which was packed and quite emotional. Very sad, my condolences to his family and friends.
