elan xrc opinions

hi there,

1st post. have been lurking for a while trying to glom on to as much great info as i can.

have recently rediscovered skiing thanks to my 9 year old daugters interest in it.

my info:
45 yr. old male, 5'10", 150 lbs, intermediate level (comfortable carving down northern michigan blue piste), looking to ski 6-8 times a year.

have always rented gear in the past but figured it's time to own some.

local ski shop had a ski swap over the weekend and i bit the bullet on a pair of gently used 160cm elan monoblock xrc's for $80 and some great condition nordica grand prix boots for $89. skis only needed a new wax treatment according to the tech.

i tried doing some web research on the xrc's but came up pretty empty. anyone have any thoughts or knowledge on these? i'm basically just looking to keep up with my daughter on the blues and maybe venture into some easy blacks. i figured for the price it was worth the gamble.

thanks for any thoughts

Hello there.

I suspect the XRC you have is pretty short, 130 or 140cm? About a 10-12m turn radius (it might be printed on the ski?). If so, it should be just fine for your purpose.

I'm more curious about those Nordica Grand Prix boots, whether they fit and how well they fit (and whether you will be able to flex them).

they are 160 cm. they are currently at the shop being waxed so i can't check the cut dimensions at the moment.

well the fit on the grand prix's is definitely snug but comfortable. from what i've read they are a legendary boot but definitely on the stiff side. i was able to flex enough in them without discomfort. at first i wasn't even sure i could get my foot in them. i definitely had to open the tounge pretty wide. but once my foot was in it felt like my foot and boot were merged as one.

they had very few swap boots in my size (28.0) and these were in such good shape and a decent price i felt like i should take a flyer on them since i could try them on in person rather than buy blind over the internet. plus the red and grey matched the ski's lol.

Spoke to an experienced ski shop worker in Windham.  He said the Elan XRC Monoblock skis were made for rentals.  He also said that the Elan rental skis are made much better than their retail ski line to be able to handle the abuse of renting.  I can tell you that I rented a pair earlier this season and found them to be a great carving ski that handled hard pack snow with ease.  Not much of a cruising ski though.
