Family day at Copper, 9 January 08

It was a family day for us, the first of the season. We picked a great day to go...

Gabe was ready as we waited to get pass pictures:

We were skiing on a few inches of new overnight, and it snowed much of the day. The snow has been coming consistently, and the skiing surface is great! Even Gabriel enjoyed spending time in the powder on the trail's edge.

Of course, mom was with us, too, and getting her ski legs back... Tonight, she's laughing at herself trying to climb the stairs... Pretty funny!

It was a great, lazy day for me. It was great to see Bong, mike_m, and Lisa Marie at lunchtime...

Only one more day on snow (this time for a clinic) before I'll see many of you in Aspen... I can't wait!

That was a great day up there. I was up there taking my AASI Snowboard Cert 2 Prep Clinics Jan 7,8,9. Lots of fresh powder bumps. Saw some skiers get launched pretty good off the hidden bumps and crash. If you saw a group of eight snowboarders yelling "hi-YA" while going down the bumps, that was us. We decided to do the moguls ninja style.

Those Over the Hill Gang people are a vicious lot at Copper. We were sitting at the side of the trail while one instructor started his Cert teaching segment. One of the OTHG people skied by and speared a Vail snowboard instructor with his ski pole. Did it right in front of two guys wearing OTHG coats. The guy didn't stop or apologize. We showed restraint and let it slide.

Thanks Steve. We just couldn't understand why he did this. : We did absolutely nothing to them.

I can't, either. The only possible explanation I can come up with is that it was a mistake he didn't realize he had made. Some of the older members have a challenging time keeping everything in mind. However, frankly, I think that's unlikely.

I have reported it, and I will follow up.

What run were you on?

Looks like it was Coppertone/High Point. The gentleman? was in darker ski clothes, maybe brown/black. One lady in the group was wearing a one piece bright blueish ski suit. They followed us down I-Dropper once on Wed too. We stopped and let them go by.

Thanks, tief, it was really cool. Gabe is just getting into skiing, and had his ups-and-downs during the day.

He is skiing on his own, though, and learned about using terrain as part of his speed control.

He also had a lot of fun playing in the powder at trails' edges. Takes after his Papa...

My son is just starting to really turn and ski. The other day I let him lead the way down a mellow green. The rules were he had to make a lot of turns and stay in the middle of the trail because of a funky double fall line on skiers left. He was doing great and then half way down he cranks on to the left, makes four turns in the 3 inches of fresh right next to the woods and turns to a stop.

I was about to remind him of the rules we agreed on for him going first when he turns around, beaming, and says to me, "Poppa, I found the powder." I just patted James on the back, told him he did a good job and to be careful.

Having a new ski buddy is awesome. Having a 4 year old one with his sense of wonder and discovery is divine.

Isn't it the coolest thing? Seeing skiing through the eyes of youth can help us discover it anew.

Last year, I skied with all of my family for the first time... it was a dream come true! All five of us skiing together.

...again on Wednesday we were all together, although the girls and Mom spent more time on the more difficult terrain while Gabe and I played around on Kokomo.

Interesting that Gabe doesn't like to fall. It really upsets him. It doesn't hurt, but he gets upset that he fell. Perfectionism? I'm not sure.

...and I can't imagine where he'd get that! :

Any ideas?

At on point James was getting pretty PO'd when ever he fell. So I spent the next run making sure I fell more often and laughed before I got up. Now he laughs when he wipes out.

In my kids lessons I always fall first.

Ain't he just the coolest? Even if he does look a bit like his Papa...

Guide? Who needs a guide? We didn't get lost more than a couple of times... : Geez!
