New Saab 9-4x: skier specific concept car?

First, I don't like what GM has does with Saab, it is a shame that it has become just a badge and not the cars they once were but this looks interesting. Don't know all the specifics but looks like it will fall in the cute ute/Softroader category of the X3, LR3, EX35, RDX, XC60 class.

Looks like the skis slide in under the rear seats.

That's pretty nifty, but in the real world it would be a pain not to have some sort of drainage in the sliding ski thingy...and, if you want to slide it out to get at your boards you'd have to clear that space of any luggage or what not. I suppose you could just not store anything but skis back there... maybe get a roof top box to put everything else in

I agree. The old gray Saab, she ain't what she used to be.

Yeah, these aren't your Uncle Sven's Saabs any more.

Tis a pity. 2005 was the first year neither my husband nor I owned a Saab since my old 85 900 ... we tried the "new" 900, the 9-5, then the 9-3 ... we were going to keep the 9-3 for a while, but my husband totaled it the day after he bought it off his lease. Bought an Audi instead.

I looked into buying a late model old style 900 (1991 or 1992 ish), but finally decided that the safety upgrades in newer cars trumped the awesomeness of the old 900s. But I really miss them.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look much like the concept.

Another problem is that the distance between the hatchback and the front of the rear seat appears to be about 160cm, based on my practical experiments of trying to get longer skis into an SUV.

Hmm not for nothing but Saabs used to be some of the ugliest cars on earth. GM might be better called GR (General Rebadger) but if nothing else at least appearance wise its been a good marriage.

That ski concept will never be made given the state of things and loss in snow everywhere.

That looks like the 9-7x.

One of the few cars I kick myself for selling was a 92 Saab 9000S, Lola and I loved that car. Someone waved too much $$ in my face and my hand automaticly went out to take it.

That's a 9-4x test mule with most of a 9-7x body on it. Notice how close the front tire is to the back of the wheel wheel and the back tire to the front of that wheel well? That's because the 9-4x has a shorter wheelbase and the body panels don't fit right. Test mules like this never look anything look like the final car, they just cobble together some body panels to fit over the drivetrain/chassis/etc.

I doubt the 9-4 would have the ski thing on it in real life....just for show for the concept as usual. Unfortunately the end result cars never look as good as the concepts either.

Good eye, also notice the rear wheel well is right off of a Traiblazer with corners and the front is rounded.

Good catch. I missed that, but you're right. Very definitely a test mule.

Typical Saab, butt frickin ugly as usual. As others have said, it's a concept car, probably never see the light of day. Plus, it's just gimicky car Mfg. crap. Looks to be a bit of a pain in the arse and screws up the luggage space. Doubt it's big enough to fit my 195s!

Actually, the 9-4x is expected to come out this fall as a 2009 model. This is the replacement for what was to be the 9-6x -- a.k.a., the second Saabaru -- a Saabified version of the Tribeca, which died when GM sold its stake in Fuji.

To me, the most encouraging part of the 9-4x is the engine: a 300hp turbo 4. Hopefully, this signals the end of Saab's second or third flirtation with replacing Saab turbo fours with GM sixes that weigh more but provide no extra power, leading to diminished performance, economy, and longevity. According to Edmunds, though, a six is planned as well.
