TR: Magic Mountain, VT 12.31.07

Let start by saying these past 12 months of 2007 was one of the best snow years I can recall. Other than last January, the skiing here in the east was some of the best ever.

Now, today. Today was one of those days that I will remember as long as Iwill be skiing. I cannot imagine the conditions that we were lucky enough to get at Magic could ever be much better. We started off the day with intentions of hitting Magic since we were to receive 4-6" over night. As we pull in the driveway, all I was really expecting was a lodge that made MRG look like Stratton. The base lodge has just received an infusion on money and they really worked on making the place :efficient:. We drop off the skis in the rack, really no reason to lock them and head inside. You could really feel the family atmosphere, there were kids running around and many "Base Mom's". We suite up, I see quite a few "Meatheads", Ski The East and Mad River Glen stickers on helmets. I also see quite a few "Don't Strattonize Magic". As we hike up to the lift, I run into "Matt", who is the Marketing Manager after a stint with Okemo. As I wait for Lola, Jim & Lil, I see some "Got change for a nickel" sticker on helmets, I strike up a conversation and find out they had a group that were ready to take off. I quickly dump my family and take off with these Maggots.

I was asking myself what I was getting into, since I didn't get to warm up first. But what the heck. We took of down a couple of trails that I didn't even know the names of, into the woods and all around. The one guy, who was the size of a horse was tearing it up and I had a tough time keeping up with him. Matts, wife, in the pics was also a great skier as were the other two guys that were with us.

Magic as a mountain is up there with Mad River and whatever "expert" mountain there is in the east, I am sure the perfect conditions had a lot to do with it. I will be back here again, if the conditions are at or near what they were today.

Magic rules! Glad you got to go and check it out. If Tuesday's storm delivers, I may have to head up on Wednesday.

You should do it.

We were hucking off of whatever we could find. Under the "Red Chair" was fantastic.

Very nice, I like the three sequential "chase" pictures

Magic got me into hucking last year. Lots of places there to get a bit of air.

The Red Line is an amazing run. Excellent that there was enough snow to cover it (it's got at least one really steep section).

Can't wait to get back there!

Nice report Phil, and we even got pics, just like TGR

I love Magic - maybe Wed for a quick visit. It's the place to be when there's snow - more on the way!

They can ski. We had a great time. It was funny, we all introduced ourselves anfter 3 runs or so, the one guy asked my name again, I told him "Flexon Phil", he said oh yeah...I usually don't remember peoples names at first, because we tend to loose them after a run". That made me feel good, especially in the afternoon, I was on my game and feeling pretty confident.

I haven't been there since the late 80s, but it's definitely a sweet place.

That could be a last minute call, if there is snow...Magic would rock.

Are you still thinking about heading up tomorrow? I'm trying to figure out a way to pull off a day trip, but it's a long-shot at this point. If they pick up a lot of snow, the odds of me making it will increase substantially.

Anyone else skiing there tomorrow?

Nice shots Phil!

I just looked at the trail map and it looks like they pack a lot into that 120 acres. 1700 vert helps too.

Seems to be a special place when conditions are good.

Didn't get to ski with Matt, Danille rocked though.

Phil - Awesome to catch up and ski with you! Next time you're around be sure to PM me.

For the record, my name is Danielle - not Liz. Geeez, BWPA - all that cheeze whiz go to your head at Ullr Fest 2006? Although growing up, I would have loved an easy name like Liz.

Oh, and Phil - I have a few shots of you from that day I will post up once I get home...I don't have them here at work.

I thought it was Danielle. Either way, I changed them in the thread.

Depending on how the weekend holds up, I might try to make it Sunday.

As far as posting pics, be kind...I edited out the "awkward" ones of you and everyone else.
