Utah This Weekend

Thread Starter
I am considering a last min trip to SLC this Saturday-Wednesday for skiing at Alta. Could I stay at a hotel near the airport and drive up to Alta in a reasonable amount of time?

Staying up there is out of my budget according to expedia, travelocity, and priceline.

Could I make it up there in an economy rental car if it dumps? Do I need a rental car?

Of course you can stay down in SLC, there are a couple hotels that are on the bus route that have ski and stay packages for a reasonable price. I cannot remember which hotels right now but they are not that expensive compared to the mountain. Check out skiutah to find them or do a search on the site as there have been a ton of Utah ski trip threads.

You may do a quick check on VRBO and see if someone will give you a good last minute deal. Don't email them though, call directly to get a quick response.

I looked briefly and saw a studio for $65/night in Cottonwood Heights. Granted I don't know where that is but my guess is you can find something in that area closer then SLC.

Cottonwood Heights is close to the mouth of LCC. If it snows a lot the canyon road might be closed or restricted to 4x4 or chains. You can park at the bottom and take the bus though.

i stay at la quinta midvale, $65/nt, 25 minutes to alta, i suggest at least a cheap car($30/day), that will usually work, if it snows, get up early and on a bus. lift tickets are about $52/day at hotel/ski shop desk.

Cars are pretty cheap in SLC and it sure makes the trek up the canyon a lot easier.

Snow is forcast for Saturday

Renting a 4wd can be some cheap insurance if you aren't practiced at spinning 2wd slowly in the snow.

I barely got my 2wd Honda out of the Albion parking lot yesterday.

Alta is in prime condition right now. Enjoy your trip!

I guess you missed the HUGE flashing sign at the bottom that warned of winter driving conditions in the canyon?

We leave today & will be there till wed. wooohoo

By the way, we were pulling for the Gators. Looks like the defense kind of let'm down.

Yes my beloved Gators had some issues. Still a fun game though. Next year will be better! I'm routing for LSU....it would be nice to have 2 SEC teams in a row knock down OSU.

Bring on the snow!!! :

It's on its way ... here's the current Cottonwood Canyons forecast from NOAA:
Winter Storm Watch in effect for late Friday through Sunday. A complex storm system will move across the area with 3 or more main features. ... Snow will develop Friday but will not become heavy until Saturday as the first of two low level thermal troughs move across. The second trough will move through Sunday bringing another round of heavy snow. Snow amounts of 20 to 30 inches are possible through Sunday.

At what point do they close the mountain down? High winds?

Just wondering if we could actually use the Free 1st Day voucher on Sunday or if conditions will be too severe.

Mostly high winds. This sounds counterintuitive, but sometimes it's better to ski the Park City resorts on huge storm days. Reasons being that interstate 80 is almost never closed, unlike the Canyon roads. The PC resorts aren't nearly as steep, or under slide paths like Mount Baldy, and so less terrain will be closed due to avi danger. Also, if you have little ones or people who don't charge steep powder with you, it's pretty miserable pushing huge piles of crud around on flat groomers. Sometimes a little less snow groomed into perfect cord is better for these guys. You can always ski the back bowls and meet for lunch and they'll have some fun too. The good news is that after a storm, snow settles, patrol does their work, and a lot of that pow terrain opens up the next day, often with clear blue skies.

P.S. Wind at the highest ridges predicted up to 100 mph, three to four feet of snow by Sunday. I've been at Alta under such conditions. Can close most or all of the mountain, interlodge is a possibility, or it could be heaven on earth, depending on the breaks.

Thanks Mr. Crab. We are staying in DV (with a trip sometime over to LCC) so we will probably be ok. I'm not pushing any backbowls yet anyways. Wish I could but I'm not there yet!

The big issue is if we actually make it on Sunday. Delta has already forewarned they may cancel flights. We have a direct flight so I'm hoping we can zip into SLC but I guess that all depends on the weather and since the second storm appears to be hitting Sunday morning, we may get caught. Guess tomorrow will be a tale tell sign if we need to rebook! It's good to know I-80 is well maintained. I was kinda concerned about driving it.

Wish us luck

Went to solitude today. Avoided the crowds & warmed up for the big snow.
It's Alta tomorrow, & possibly Powder Mtn Sunday.
Lots of wind today!

My friend Pete was at PCMR yesterday with little kids and said they nearly got blown off the mountain. Today is kinda shaping up with about six inches at PC and a lull. It'll be interesting to get the LCC report other than so far "the canyons closed" They usually eventually open it, and if they don't, OMG those lucky suckers who are staying up there. Pow Mow is a pretty good idea for Sunday. See you in church! Alligator; Delta's pretty good at turning around planes in snow, and the Airport is on the desert floor so they get less of it. But- I got stuck for eight hours trying to fly out the day after Christmas- official announcent said "plane broke." Good luck.

Thanks Crabman! Sorry I couldn't resist, if you have seen My Name is Earl you would understand the reference

I think we might be ok since we arrive mid-morning. Any later we might have issues. Just want to get the family settled before the next round kicks in.

Do you know of any playgrounds around Deer Valley/PC? Thought it would be good to take the non-skiing tot to play and to burn off some energy.
