Did I get the right length?

I am 5'11" and about 200lbs. Intermediate skier about a level 6. I ski for fun and I do not race.

I was on a pair of Head XRC 500 163 cm. I bought these last year and had fun on them but would sink in the powder and felt a bit sketchy at speed for my size.

I just bought a new pair of 07 Head Monster im 77 in the 170 cm. I took these out for the first time today and loved the way the reacted as far as handling, and especially at speed they felt so much more stable then my old 500's.

I was thinking of going to a 177 cm. length but my dealer recommended the 170 as it was wider than the old 500's and with the additional length going to a 170 cm. that should be fine . My dealer also thought that the 170 would turn tighter than the 177 and the thought it would suit me better.

Since I love my new i 77 in the 170 cm. length should I have gone to a 177 cm. and maybe have liked it even more?

I thought maybe at my height and weight the 177 would be more of a good thing, or maybe not?

Any input appreciated,
Thanks Aaron

"It's too late baby, ya it's too late". The buyin's done and the enjoyment begins. I am about your height and maybe 185lbs. I would have gone for 172-177. I bet you did ok especially since you like the ski. And ain't that what it's all about! Have fun and don't thinkaboutit:

Well, these questions can only be answered by demos of both lengths. But really, if you like the 170cm and are happy with them, that's a good sign. You might have a "what if" circling in your head, but it doesn't sound like you have a performance-based reason to dislike the 170cm. That right there makes me think you made a good choice. If you hated the 170cm or felt like it was not enough ski, it would be another story.

If you were an expert skier, or looking for more off-piste capability, I would have said 177cm for sure. Being an intermediate, I think 170cm is a very good choice for you.

Funny thing about length, is that it can change the ski's behavior quite a bit, and not necessarily for the better. I owned the same ski in two different lengths, and they had different personalities. There's no reason to think that 177cm would be more of a good thing -- it could actually be too much ski and less fun to ride. That's what makes me suggest that being happy on the 170cm right now is a good place to be -- you're obviously near the sweet spot for that ski and your capabilities.

P.S. I'm a skill level above you, 6'1" 190 lb, and ski the iM77 in 177cm. I am really pleased with the ski and the length. If you're a level below me with similar body dimensions (height/weight deltas sort of cancel) then 170cm definitely makes sense.

Your dealer is a good man.

Thanks for all of the input. I do feel a bit better about the ski length now and it is 100% improvement over my 163 XRC 500's that I was using. I was a bit concerned if I should have went for the 177 for the powder, but I have yet to try them in powder.

Tomorrow there should be some fresh powder on the ground and I will try to head up to either A-Basin, or Loveland and give them a shot in the fresh and off the groomed. I live just west of Denver so it's just a quick shot up to the slopes, unless I-70 is backed up with traffic!

Pierre,
I was curious as to why you said my "dealer was a good man"?

The explanation you gave about the conversation you had with your dealer made me believe you were getting good information. So much of the time, dealer information is junk.

I seldom post here because I am not much into ski gear except boots. Remember, "It ain't the arrow, its the indian". I can virtually ski anything you stick on my feet if I am in my boots.

How do I shop. Very carefully and not often for a pair of boots. I just bought a pair in October and have just gotten them adjusted to where I can really ski with them. Skis? Whatever is being closed out on a hellava cheep sale in the length I want.

Lots of good boards out there a couple of years old still in the wrappers that can save you a ton of money. The ugly reality of the current model years latest and greatest is its a year old next season and worth about 1/3 of what you paid for it.
