Magic Mtn - 12/22/07 (Opening Day)

I hit Magic on Opening Day 2007-08 & it was a great day! Magic had 37 trails open all served by the Black Chair. The conditions were excellent & there was nobody there!! I was there with 2 of my sons, Connor – 14 & Kevin - 9. We also met up with some friends from home so the boys were able to ski with some of their buddies.

We skied the following runs during the course of the day:

Wizard to Talisman
Wizard to Slide of Hans to Lower Wizard
Broomstick to Heart of the Magician
Wizard to Sorcerer
Upper Magic Carpet to Up Your Sleeve to Vertigo

LUNCH BREAK

Upper Magic Carpet to Medium to Mystery
Upper Magic Carpet to Lower Magic Carpet
Upper Magic Carpet to Medium to Kinderspiel
Up Your Sleeve to Vertigo
Trick to Mystery
Broomstick to Heart of Magician to Lower Blackline/Hocus Pocus
Witch to Goniff Glade

The conditions were great. The ungroomed trails had a lot of snow, mostly untracked but a lot of heavy crud as well. It was fun to ski those trails but it was also challenging & served as a good workout for the legs & cardiovascular system. It was nice to be able to mix in some groomers from time to time with these natural terrain trails.

The groomed trails skied very nice. Good base, solid corduroy (even late in the day because the place was empty today) & a lotta fun to get some speed going. But then again, no one ever goes to Magic to ski groomers (right?) so the natural ungroomed trails were the most fun & also the most challenge overall. It was great to mix it up with ungroomed & corduroy during the course of the day.

There was no wind (or very little of it anyway) today so the weather was real good for a nice cold December day. Did I mention that no one was there? The longest we waited in a lift line was 20-30 seconds. Ski-on; ski-off at will!!

The only downer for the whole day (for me) occurred on the last run down Goniff Glade. The snow was so nice in there but I took a turn hard, my skis popped off (appropriately so) & my body went flying down the fall line. I landed in some soft snow but right underneath where I landed was a solid rock! I was in some serious pain initially but it later passed. Nevertheless I have a huge bruise on my upper leg/lower butt cheek that is pretty sore. I’ll be fine but I may limp around for a day or two until the thing heals. Bottom line: no broken bones, torn ligaments or anything serious. Just a big bad bruise that will go away with time.

All-in-all, a great day at Magic today. I’m looking forward to a nice season at Magic this year.

Oh yea, like it wasn't foggy at Magic.

Let's see, it's about 10 miles away...

No, I'm at home now for Xmas. I'll be driving back to VT after dinner tomorrow.

I skied about 2 hours today, got bored. So I came home to do a few things and join the family for Xmas.

Merry Christmas,

Thanks for the report MS...glad to hear Magic is open and the skiing is good. With plenty of natural snow perhaps their snowmaking pond problem will not be such a factor.
