Hmmm... Curious minds want to know...
Actually, VS, we do have this and you and Barnes created the model with your work with Chris Geib. You guys did a long-term customized coaching job with him that included online work and onsnow work in a really seamless effective way. And Chris is a really excellent skier now. (Sorry, Chris, I had to say it. Your secret is out, so no more leaving pieces of your gear in Highlands Bowl.
) But the scale is really small compared to the size of the membership.
So... what if we made that available to everyone AND paid the coaches to do that. It's not fair to ask all the coaches to do for free what you guys volunteered to do with Chris. Even if it were fair, they wouldn't do it.
And this refers to L2L's concern. I think top pros and testers should get paid to produce top material. To do it on a much larger scale, reaching more of our membership, and drawing in our virtually bottomless well of great coaches rings kinda nice to me. But we can't get this for free.
One thing that has always disturbed me, is that so many of our coaches are so busy trying to make a living that participation online with epicski becomes sort of a back burner idea. They just can't afford the time. Why isn't Mike Rogan contributing here? Because he has a real job in this business, and he is unbelievably busy and effective with it. We can't compete. What if we could make it affordable and attractive for him (them)?
What if we could pay really good guys to do testing that had the real information that our members ask for. With no disrespect to the mags, I get a little weary of the cute little performance phrases that I read about every fall. They sort of sound like the "dating game". "If this ski had wings, we'd win the war!" "This ski rocks like Mick Jagger on steroids."
So, yeah, we already have it, as you say. But we're limited by the finances. If we had the subscriptions, we could create value IN ADDITION TO the forums.
The way I see it is that is we can do this while honoring and enhancing the forums as they are, then we've got a real winner here. (If not, then we shouldn't even try. I believe we can.)
Thanks for your question. It opens the door to the real meaning of what we're trying to do. We do have a lot of what you say, but we could have more that would really benefit our group. This group (the Barking Bears) has reached a size--a critical mass--where it could really achieve some benefits for itself.
