Do binding adapter plates effect the performance of a ski? do they actually transmit "boot information" to the ski differently than mounting a binding directly to the ski?

For instance, Salomon uses a mount system called smartrak prolink that claims to provide; the highest degree of tip-to-tail edge control and ensures a constant boot-to-ski ramp angle for optimum skier balance.

Do these systems actually work or are they implemented so you will want use their bindings, what are the pro's and con's...?
