Well - it's ~150/pp round trip on CME from Denver; some of the lodging operators have discounts with CME - not a huge amount, but worth checking - maybe CME will give you something off. I would prefer a shuttle over an automobile, which you don't really need since the public transportation around Avon and to BC is quite good and free. If the idea is to go drive to Vail, I would prefer the public transportation as well, even though there is a cost ($3-6/pp, each way). Just a whole lot more conveninent than the parking lots (and cost of parking).
The other idea is to see what the cost is for cancelling and rebooking to eagle; it depends on the airline's procedures, current ticket prices relative to when you bought (there are steep discount sales) and - honestly - what the agent over the phone might be willing to do for you depending on seat availability. You will still have to take a shuttle from Eagle to Avon, I'm thinking it is about half the price of the shuttle from Denver.
If you do rent a vehicle and have skis, you will probably need to rent a ski rack to get everything in it.
