Mantra Jr vs. K2 Bad Seed?

I'm looking at buying my 11 year old boy new skis for xmas. I was set on the Volkl Mantra Jr until I saw the new K2 Bad Seed. I'm sure both would be great but was wondering if anyone knows these skis and has an informed opinion. He's pretty light, advanced skier, skis Whistler about 20-30 days per year. Loves air, pow and the park. Thanks!

We had a similar topic last week. Big-Mountain Freeride skis for an 11 year old.. Anyway, I thought comments by Whitehouse and SierraJim's comments there might be interesting to you. Always nice to have the candid knowledge of the retailers and pros here.

I'm the one who asked the question in the other thread.

The Bad Seed and the Mantra Junior have almost the exact same profile at 113-80-104 (105 in the tail for the Mantra Jr). The longest you can get the Mantra JR is a 138, whereas the Bad seed comes in a 149.

I asked the question in the other thread, because while I was attracted to the Mantra Jr. for him, I thought a 138 was going to be too short to get more than 1 year out of (He skis 142 SL skis and 158 for GS).

I ended up going with a pair of Fischer Villian Pros in a 154 - mainly because they were available at my local shop. At 110-80-110, they are pretty similar in float to the Bad Seed - actually a little wider in average width. 154 Sounds long, but remember that twin tips are going to ski about 10cm shorter than stated length.

Agreed, except:

I think that (a) overstates the effect of twins, and (b) ignores the K2 sizing anomaly.

Twins ski shorter because they have a shorter effective edge. But I've never seen a ski that lost 4" (10cm) of its effective edge.

For my guy 138 should be just fine. 80mm should do it for a 65lb lightweight so the boy's getting the Mantras. thx for the input.
