If you're really a university student, then you should go to office hours and (politely) chastise your supervising professor/instructor for this project and ask her/him to give you a crash course in qualitative and quantitative sampling.

Your survey is pretty flawed and will produce fairly predictable results within a narrow demographic sampling or, from the open questions, results that will be difficult to aggregate and use.

But, if that's what you want....

You'd be better off, for the purposes of your project, to flip through the pages of magazines like Oustide, Skiing, or Ski (since they've already done your demographics--likely a close match for what you'd find on this board) and looking at the car ads in there. Then see what you can improve upon for a given price point. Then expand your search to other pubs of different (aspects of) snowsports, e.g. Powder, Freeskier, Snowboarder, etc.

Good luck with it. If you ever post your design online, many here would surely be interested in seeing it.

The Car specs I want.

Weight =under 2500lb(this is very important any more weight and the car will handle like ****), also lower weight will mean better gas milage

Horsepower = 300hp/300lb torque from a a small light weight turbo 4. or inline 6. Or turbo diesel 4/6.

Transmission = 6 speed manual with 5 very close gears and 6th being pretty much a highway over drive gear. Dont make an automatic that way when I am searching for a used one, i dont have to sift though tons of slushboxes I dont want.

Brakes- 4 wheel disks brake are a must. Make them as large as you can fit inside what ever wheel you choose. DONT use slotted or crossdrilled rotor because they tend to crack easier and speed up brake pad wear. ABS should not be standard becasue not everyone needs it and it add weight more stuff to break, and more cost to the car. There should be a proper hand brake in the car(not that foot brake bull ****) and the hand brake should be drum style(inside the disc in the rear)

Suspension - 4 wheel double wishbone, nothing else. Everything else is just crap. wishbones gain camber while the body rolls giving you better traction in a turn. It allows you to set the car up pretty comfortable and still produce great skidpad/SL number. Also set it up to oversteer at the limit not to understeer like all the pussy consumer cars out there today.

Steering - if it has Power steering make it so it underbooasted so you can feel the road. Also make a option to get a non powersteering car because that will save weight, make the car go faster, and make it get better gas mileage.

wheels/tires - it should come with 2 set of wheel and tires. One set of 17x9 inch wheel with 255/50R17 performance summer tires like a Falken Anzeis and another set of 16x6 inch wheels with 205/60R snow tires on it.

drivetrain - AWD with a an adjustable center diff with the default set more rear biased. you should have infinitive setting from powder front to rear. Including front wheel drive only(meaning the rear drive train should not be touring at all) for better gas mileage on a highway, to 50/50 for snow/ dirt travel to 100 percent rear for performance driving on pavement.

body type - you should sell three type of bodys. 3 door hatchback, 5 door hatchback, and station wagon. Forget 2 door coupes and 4 doors sedans because the trunk opening is too small. You need a large hatch back to get gear in and out easily.

interior ergonomics - copy what honda does and dont cheap out here. the car can look ugly on the outside but you have to sit in here everytime you drive it. The shifter should be closer to the steering wheel ala rally car and should be attached to the transmission with rods not cables. The front seat should be deep racing style bucket seats. Soft wide non supportive seat suck and hurt my back. Also when attacking mountain roads you want something to keep out from sliding sideways. Also less technology is better and means less stuff will break and have to be fixed. Make the HVAC controls and radio controls simple. Dont have everything run though a screen, or though i-drive piece of junk BMW has going on.

For the back make a 60/40 split rear seat so you can carry gear inside and still have a person back there. also make it so that when the seat fold down in the wagon there is enough room for 2 back there. I want a shaggin wagon.

Other things it should have.

roof rack
boot dryers in the truck
ipod jack
radar jammer
Cb radio

also its drivetrain should be as bulletproof as a Honda/toyato, and its body should last like a german car.

Remove the ABS and the A/C and this is pretty darn close.

yeah but it weighs 700lb too much and uses mac struts. Not to mention shitting power steering, and Subies understeer like its their job. also you dont get enough adjustability with the AWD system.

Subura is close but not perfect.

I'd like the 3.2V6Q version of my car (Brera), but make it about 1000kg lighter.
Oh, and get the economy up over 30mpg (imp)

FYI, here's what Homer Simpson would add to a vehicle:

* Extremely large beverage holder
* A little ball on top of the aerial
* Tail fins
* Bubble domes
* Shag carpeting
* Several horns that all play "La Cucaracha"
* For infant passengers a second soundproof bubble dome with optional straps and muzzles

Homer described the car as "powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball". Works for me.

My idea ski car would be-
5 door hatchback
No power steering
Turbodiesel, under 2.5 liters
5 or 6 speed manual trans, like mentioned, no auto available, so used cars are all manual
VW, audi, or saab. (or volvo or subaru)
Air conditioning (I hate a hot vehicle)
Optional sunroof (not standard or anything)
awd with diff lock
Cool steelies (wheels)
Light (under 2500 lbs)
Nice seats, heated cloth
Have a simple dash
Have a nice, simple but functional and informative instrument cluster
No freakin' navigation system with screen crap
Have a normal size spot for the stereo (is it a DIN or something like that?), with the area of the dash around it able to match an aftermarket stereo nicely.
Friggin awesome heater controls that make you feel like you're in a helicopter or something

That's all for now.

Good snow tires, a well-fitting rack and ski box, and under 10 litres per 100 kilometres--what could be better? (Oh yeah, my 1991 Previa actually has a small refrigerator between the driver and passenger seats--that would be pretty cool, and it would also be nice to have a way to plug the ipod directly in to the stereo system rather than mucking about with the fm receiver)

and since I also sometimes teach quantitative research methods to grad students, I'll point out that this survey may not really yield you a lot of useful information. I'd suggest going out to the parking lots of a couple of ski resorts and inventorying what people are currently driving (after introducing yourself to resort security). You might also try simply asking people what are the (five) essential features they see in a vehicle for snow sports and the (three) innovations they would most like to see in a new model.
