No infinitive was split in this attempted communication. In Star Trek the sentence is “To boldly go…” thus splitting the infinitive “to go.”

Oops. Yup. Right. Grovel. Will disappear immediately into dark corner with text books...

I am just kidding. I have been guilty of many typos and other errors in sentence structure in my posts here. The gist of Oboe's post is that the writer be able make himself or herself understood to the reader. Since this is a skiing forum that seems to be the rule that should prevail here.

Where's the damned spell checker?! WHERE?! But seriously, thank you, I DO appreciate having my errors pointed out to me. ALL lawyers just LOVE to have their errors pointed out to them, wouldn't you say?

Oboe,
I find your comments consistently to be among the most thoughtful and interesting posts in this forum. It was with some reluctance that I pointed out the spelling errors. However, given some of the subject matter of this thread I could not successfully resist the temptation to do so. Chalk it up to the approaching summer...

On the bright side of things, I will be able to stop off to go skiing at Timberline for the next couple of days on my way to Seattle. That should restore my disposition.

Dudes,

My 13-year-old and his snow/skateboarding buddies have a web page (title: "gerbils on helium") with a chat component. They are so not into grammar as we know it. They have evolved a language of contractions and abbrev. in order to minimize keystrokes so they seem to communicate in one chopped sentence-like structure what would take us a paragraph. I can't even begin to create one but for example: 'sup' would mean "So, how are things with you, in general and what are the most important things happening to you in your life?"

It's the wave of the future, IMHO.

Please change the title of this post to:

Grammar for Gapers.

Then someone please make a list of those annoying acronyms so that we may understand what it is they imply!!

As an example:

IMHO In My Humble Opinion
BTW By The Way

There are some that are completely foreign to me, and I can't even remember now what they are! Something ending in MAO. :

In the immortal words of Rebecca DeMornay in "Risky Business":

"Go to school, Joel. Learn something".

: (This is Joel with his sunglasses on. He has learned to say, "What the f--k". Which is what we should all say from now on, and all get along better.)

What the fook. :

PMFJIH, but this is not a BFD. Many people have already compiled such lists. So, APYR, take a look at:

http://www.astro.umd.edu/~marshall/abbrev.html
http://http://www.ircbeginner.com/ir...eviations.html
http://www.allstocks.com/edu/html/internet_lingo.html

ATEOTLYWBAT speak Geek like the BIC.

BOC, BOF stick together, so you should reserve use of most of these for appropriate situations, BTAICBW and you might find that you love this modern version of Pig Latin. BYKTA, didn't ya. EOL. HTH, but its probably MTUEWTK.

GTBOS, GGTN, ATB,

Tom / PM

TYVM!!!!!!!

It only took me about 10 minutes to read!

Yeesh.

Some of those things are not on the list....
GRRRRRRR (meaning GRRRRRR)

YVW.

You are probably correct that some of the abbreviations weren't listed - I didn't look up each one. A few might have crept in from when I was a kid and was a ham radio operator.

Tom / PM

PS - MTUEWTK = More Than yoU Ever Wanted To Know

PS#2 - Sorry about the 10 min. I don't know what got into me ... The devil made me do it.

As long as people are spineless enough to be afraid to correct your nephew and his pals, there is a good chance "the future" will be composed of slang and acronyms, and grammar & spelling will be quaint antiquities.

the average person's attention span will be 0.6 seconds

pictures will replace words

...starting right now...

Just a follow up from some earlier posts about college shopping. Two years ago my son was a high school junior shopping for a small college that offered a good education, a decent music program, nearby skiing, great fishing and lots of outdoor activity. He has found them all and is happy as hell. Sure he is far away from home...PA. To quote him, "This is the best thing that ever happened to me" and "I wish you and mom could be here to enjoy this place: but, then it wouldn't be college." Perfect comments for mom and dad to hear. He skied at Monarch yesterday and will have a season pass to Crested Butte. Western State College of Colorado $16000 per year...out of state

Also, he can walk 30 minutes to the airport and be in Newark 5 hours later.

So true! I don't have much to add except to congratulate 9.12 skier on those great marks! I wish you good luck in your search.
