Maier triumphs in Vail

Hermann Maier produced a breathtaking run to win a World Cup downhill race on Saturday -- his second victory in a week. The double Olympic champion was nearly a second faster than his nearest challenger, fellow Austrian Hans Knauss, speeding down a treacherous Birds of Prey course in one minute 39.76 seconds.

One day after a stirring victory, Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) tore down Birds of Prey's speed run Saturday to break up an Austrian stranglehold on the top spots, finishing fourth in a World Cup downhill. Hermann Maier earned the 44th victory of his storied career, leading seven Austrians into the top 10. Bryon Friedman (Park City, UT), who collected his first World Cup points Friday, broke into the top 30 for the second day in a row, finishing 24th. Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) did not finish his run.

NBC will televise coverage of the downhill, the second race of the Chevy Truck Birds of Prey weekend, at 3 p.m. EST on Dec. 21. Outdoor Life Network will broadcast coverage of Rahlves' victory Friday in a race moved from Val d'Isere, France, because of poor snow conditions, Saturday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. EST with a repeat at 5 p.m. on the 14th.

Maier, who won a super G last Sunday at Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies, finished in an unofficial 1:39.76 with Hans Knauss second and Andreas Schifferer third before Rahlves broke the string of Austrians. His time was 1:41.01. (Schifferer was second in GS behind Bode Miller in the giant slalom Nov. 22 at the Chevy Truck America's Opening in Park City, Utah, with Knauss third.)

So Hermann Maier takes the over all lead in points.
It looks like the way Hermann ""TORE"" down the slope today
The Herminator is back...!!!!

The man is truly amazing, especially considering the pain he has to endure to race and the lack of snow feel he claims to experience because of his injuries. The reformed Hermann is so much easier to root for than the old one. I just wonder if he can keep competing at this level for an entire season. That kind of abuse really can take a toll on the body.

It's early yet. Let's see what Bode and Daron uncork once the season really gets rolling.
