Oz...coverage of skiing events has been
lame, not to say scandalous, in the past years.
What happened is (my perception of events):
The Italian Ski Federation developed a taste for money, they found (thanks to the fact that Tomba was, well himself, and that Compagnoni was finally driving the girls team out of the mediocrity) a biig $pon$or, which agreed on one condition, to be the sole sponsor (for huge $$$$).
Previously the FIS was sponsorized by a pool of italian manufacturers (for skis, tech wear, poles, etc). FIS threw themm all out.
TV rights were granted to one and only one commercial TV (the one of our present prime minister), whereas previously there were at least 2/3 channels transmitting it, the "state" (RAI) TV and a now defunct commercial channel (TMC).
The commentators were both very skilled
(the one who was commentating for TMC was an ex-dh racers, his name Bruno Gattai, just to bring an example, when they started to insert commercials, he got so angry, and started a "personal" battle with the management, being who he is, he sort of won, they invented the 5 seconds commercial!)
Then this third commercial channel bought the rights for all events, not considering that Tomba and the Compagnoni were now nearing their carreers end.
The year after Tomba retired, Compagnoni did it too, and the big $pon$or did not renew the contract, the old "pool" had already found other way to survive (sponsoring others nations!) and replied to the now "ho well, we re-considered things, and now agree that you sponsor us" kind of offer from FIS,"thanks but, no thanks".
The skiing events disappeared from the commercial channel (was in fact shown at very "funny" hours like 1 o'clock in the night, when the event had been scheduled for the previous morning), but I had since long acquired a satellite dish and was watching ski on Eurosport and on the German channels.
This year, the "state" tv has bought back the rights to show the events, still their coverage of Olympics is "shy".
Compared to how soccer is treated by the Tv channels, it makes my blood boil...
Hi Lisamarie, not only that, she's also become a mother...
Oh, did you notice, while in Bormio, how many people carries the name Compagnoni, there?
