We stayed few few days in a little old ladie's B&B, really cheap, close to Ludvig's castles and close to Lech-Zurs via a direct little back road. There is a local ski area which looked worthwhile too.
Is that road open in the winter now? In 1991 it wasn't.

It was open a couple of years ago, but they close it for a day or so when it snows.

This year they might just close it fo the season if it keeps up.

Try www.holidayautos.com for your rentals - they work with Hertz, Avis, Europcar, etc.

Stick to the speed limits - 130kph is about 80mph.
Front wheel drive cars every time - no need for 4x4, and better mileage - currently in England I am paying around $8.25 per US Gallon of petrol. The rest of Europe isn't as expensive, but it's not far off it.

Try the local food/beer - it's possibly a lot different to what you're used to.

How long are you going for? European ski areas tend to be a lot larger than US ones, so, unless you are just wanting to tick off resorts visited, you'll want to spend 4+ days in each one.

I'll echo the earlier comments that you'll look like a major tool in the Alps with a 4x4 SUV.
Say what? They're all over the place here. Can't speak for the French Alps, but in Italy, Switzerland and Austria you see plenty.

Also Try AutoEurope, they also rent from several companies, but call them and get someone on the phone. Ask for a quote and then tell them that the price is high and you can usually get the cost down by 20%, their call center is in Maine so talk about skiing while you're building rapport with the person who answers. If they won't budge, then call back and get someone else on the phone, their price is ALWAYS negotiable! I went for 12 days in April and paid $716 for a full-size car which normally cost $860. Expect to pay around $150 for a tank of gas too! I ended up with a Fiat Wagon that went 215kpm! If you go into Switzerland, DO NOT SPEED! If you get a ticket, you have to pay it before you leave the country. I've had snap shots taken while speeding in Germany, Austria and France and never heard anything. Good luck, it sounds like you're in for a hell of a trip!

Not true, in my experience, though they will certainly track you down.

Austrian cops once wanted to confiscate my ski equipment for - as they said - irresponsibly driving on the opposite side of the road and cutting corners. It was hillarious!
