Colorado is OPEN for skiing 2002-3!

Wow--who'd have thought this would happen, after the severe drought we've suffered for a year now. Silvertorn Resort is now open, October 2, 2002! One run only, but the chair is turning, and they're skiing powder--I witnessed it on the morning news.

It's crystal clear this morning, but we actually have a winter storm warning in effect for this evening in Summit County. That's the most promising level of forecast, other than "it's snowing NOW." It's still likely only a teaser at this time of year--we'll have more summer-like weather yet. But the snow guns are blowing, Mother Nature is encouraging, and the season HAS begun!

Amazing and more than welcome! Folks are really getting excited. This form the Denver paper.

[i]DENVER - A winter storm that moved into Colorado from the west could bring 5 to 10 inches of snow to areas above 8,500 feet. The morning drive in Denver will be wet but not snowy.

A winter storm warning was posted through early Wednesday morning for Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Grand, Larimer, Park, and Summit Counties.

9NEWS meteorologist Mike Nelson says Wednesday will stay cool and damp over most of Colorado, with showers below 8,000 feet and a mix of snow and rain between 8,000 and 10,000 feet, and just snow above 10,000 feet.

Bears you will excuse us for being a little giddy over this. Its been a long dry summer.

Bob I'm taking this early season snow as a good sign, that we are going to have a vary good year in the West. My nephew is going to School at Colorado Westren. He says there a ton of snow at Crested Butte But they won't open untill Dec 16th. He and some buddies are hiking for thier turns. Yeah it's going to be a good season.

Contrary to what was represented on the Denver news , Silverton Mountain is not yet open. That footage was from Sept. 18 of employees skiing powder. I spoke to Jen(one of the owners/founders of Silverton Mountain)yesterday. She said if the snow keeps up they hope to actually open 10/17.Guided skiing at $99 per day advanced/expert only. You must have an avie beacon, shovel, and probe to ski there. She said the terrain being skied in that footage is all grass(probably tundra I would guess)so it can be skied with minimal snow. Let it snow-BIG
