Atomic '05 Metron EX ?

Just got these (used and free), need to get bindings. I am told I need Atomic bindings to fit the predrilled riser plate. Anyone know what my options are here? Neox and/or Race lines, others? Do I need to pay attention to a specific width brake (the ski has a 84mm waist). I am looking for something that has a DIN up to 12.

Thank you,
George

Your cheapest place is probably STP http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/3...-Bindings.html If you are buying new. Look for a 20% off coupon code online and possibly free shipping too. I would post a WTB in the swap section though and try to find some super cheap used ones since they are for free skis.

You need wider brakes but some people just bend the 76mm ones with no issues I am told. Mine came with the wider brakes.

You CAN put other brands on the plates, you just need to be creative.

The Neox 412s are the binding that was designed for the M:EXs. The Sierra Trading Post deal is comparable to what I've seen for new ones on e-bay. You can mount them yourself on the M:EX rails without much hassle. The only issue is that the STP bindings come with 76mm brakes but the M:EXs have an 84mm waist. The next size larger brakes are almost too wide for the M:EXs and I would suggest just bending the 76s to fit.

Thanks guys. I will try to find used neox 412. Interesting that the 412's are designed for the ski, yet you need to bend the brake. Bad engineering?

They are available with different brake widths.

The Neoxs were not specifically designed just for the M:EXs, but for the rail system that comes on that ski. My 412s came with the 76mm brakes and the next wider size. I mounted the wide ones on my M:EXs but they stick out so far that I can hook them while skiing. Rather than spend $50 more for the much wider brakes it seems like a better option to just bend the 76s. You only need another 4mm on each side, which shouldn't alter their effectiveness.

Mudfoot, how wide were the wide ones?

I am looking at a set with 81mm, less of a bend, would they hook?

How are your 76mm bended ones working out? any issues?

Thanks,

I looked at the mannual and it appears they have brakes in 76,81,88,99 and 107mm that fit the Neox 412. When I bought my M:EXs with 412s the bindings came with 76mm brakes and they gave me another wider set for the 84mm waist, which I assumed were the next widest size. Apparently I was mistaken. The brakes they gave seem to be the 99mm ones, and obviously the 88s would be the correct size. The brakes don't really fold back over the ski much when they are retracted, so mine 99s stick out pretty far. I have talked to people who bent the 76s and didn't have a problem, and I have other bindings that are bent more than 4mm on each side and work fine, but those fold in pretty far when retracted.

I think bending the 81s would work without problems (you are only talking about a couple of mm on each side), or maybe you can find a shop that carries Atomics and see if they would do a trade. I have not hooked my 99s but have banged them together enough that it scares me and I plan on trying the bent 76s this season.

81mm it is

Thanks for clearing that up Mudfoot. The 76mm i am looking at are 05/06's and the 4 mm bend on each side should work, but for $35 more I can get the 06/07's that are lighter with the 81 mm which should be fine. Easy to justify, as if the 76's have any problems I am out another $20 for brake upgrade.

I am not sure what the lighter option is, but the M:EX with Neox bindings and rail system is extremely heavy. Regardless of the brake issue, you might want to consider a lighter option if there is one and it's not much more $$. I love the way they ski but the setup is definitely on the beefy end of the weight spectrum.

you can also use the older atomic race/xentrix series binding on the MEx. It is a bit lighter than the Neox i think in the 412 version. Just drill out the dimpled holes on the plate
