Hey Guys,

I heard some people go to Turkey for cross-country skiing? Does anybody has some info about this country? is it worth giving a try? Are there high mountains there? Thanks in advance for any kind of information!

I don't know much about cross country in Turkey but had been there for a ski touring to Taurus mountains and it was lovely. if you like you can contact Turan at demavendtravel.com

I clicked expecting pictures of skiing turkeys. Sadly I was disappointed.

this is just one of a number of interesting and extremely confusing posts i have noticed cropping up on Epic lately.

my first question would be: where are you from? are you a US or Canadian skier looking to take an "exotic" ski vacation? or are you a European looking to escape the French and Austrian crowds.

The next puzzling thing to me is that you mention you are looking to cross-country ski in Turkey. then you ask if the mountains are high. would one necessarily want high/tall mountains to cross country ski? granted i haven't done much XC skiing, but most folks i know who do it prefer flatter hills.

just a couple of observations.

best of luck with organizing your trip as it could be one of a lifetime!

Don't be so hard on the OP, dookey67. Maybe English isn't his/her first language?

Maybe he'll clarify...
^being "hard" was not my intention.

was just making an observation on the post and how there's been quite a few like it that are kind of obtuse, for lack of a better word, and somewhat random in topic and scope, not to mention lacking any clarification/explanation.

maybe it's because i'm a journalist and well-versed in the standard "who/what/when/where/why" modus operandi (i.e. I would have begun the post with an introduction then gone into why I was interested in visiting Turkey and whether any Bears had experiences they'd like to share or tips they could offer for the trek).

Everything I've seen about Turkey is in the Warren Miller and TGR and Matchstick films. I've never seen/heard about folks traveling there to XC ski. Then again I'm not tapped into the XC world.

At any rate, I apologize if I came off rude, was just trying to aid the OP in perhaps clarifying their intentions and what exactly they were looking for along the lines of something such as "49 Y.O. XC skier looking for the adventure of a lifetime. Have read about Turkey. Is it worth the trip from Country X and do they have decent XC trails?" or the like.

Again, Kurt Cobain if I came off rude.

3rd hand info only but the resort skiing is supposed not to be worth a separate trip. Plus the lift tickets f.i. at Palandöken are only available for hotel guests on site.

However the heli skiing in the coastal mountains south of Trapzpon is amazing. There is a Swiss run operation I can't find the link of right now. Have seen pics and plan on going myself one day.

Sorry guys, it is actually my mistake, that I didn't know the difference between cross-country skiing and ski touring. I'm from Iran, an Azeri Turkish and I had a chance to visit Turkey this winter and was wondering about this country and it's mountains in general. Thanks a lot for all the information you gave, and I think I found what I'm looking for. Thanks all and crestedlark.

hey Tepel:

I'm curious as to why you wanna check out the skiing in Turkey.

I just finished reading a story about skiing in Iran in the October 2007 issue of Skiing Magzine and it sounds like you have 5 pretty decent mountains/resorts to choose from, all within driving distance of Tehran.

Have you already skied them all (them being: Mount Tochal, Darband Sar, Shamshak, Dizin, Darnavand)

If so, what are they like?

The article made it sound like the skiing in Iran is pretty cool.

Though I wonder how an American such as myself would be able to swing a trip there given our somewhat tenuous relationships with that part of the country.

Any insight from a local such as yourself would be appreciated!

Thanks (and again, sorry if I came off harsh in my initial post...I have a bad habit of coming off a bit curt in my posts, which is purely unintentional).
