What is favorite music while skiing.

I know there are disagreements about skiing with music, but I really enjoy a good rip with music. For me, bumps, steeps, powder, and open groomed sl or gs runs are all a blast to ski with music. (I do turn off the music with a mute switch when in congested areas or when going into serious terrain with friends for safety reasons).

The Question...What do you listen to while skiing?

I enjoy Joe Satraini just about everywhere while skiing, althought I never listen to his music otherwise. I also enjoy spanish guitar, the Who, or other rock (Thick as a Brick is good to ski to). Slower music or lots of vocals seems to get in the way. I tried Jazz, but the disrupted rhythm didn't work well.

I listen to a wide variety. It kind of depends on where/what I'm skiing. I have my definite favorites for deep powder. Here are some that I listen to

The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Santana, Modern English, The Police, Tool, Styx, Rush

jet, the wedding present, killers, the stills, postrock such as godspeed you! black emperor, iggy, queens of the stone age, maybe some philip glass if it's fast enough

But no music is better than the sound of the wind on an empty slope during twilight, when everyone else has left the mountain and you're the last one in (or you're deluded and think you're the last one in). I love that quiet. There's nothing sweeter.

To quote Huxley: "After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music."

For me a little Widespread Panic, Johnny Cash, Elvis, The Cult and Coldplay works.

You all may boo and hiss, but I really like skiing to older smooth tunes from artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole.

Try it!

My favorite runs are when, after taking the last lift, I wait till everyone but the patrolers have left before I start down. Like Trotsky, I love that quite and the sound of my skis on snow and ice. On occasion ,however, I may listen to a little Vivaldi .

The wind

The sound of sharp edges digging into ice

the gentle clunk clunk of a lift

the swoosh of new powder
