Maybe this website would help:http://ridelaketahoe.com/tahoe411/transportation.asp
Something tells me it may be cheaper to rent an economy car then pay for shuttle from Sacramento for two riders, if it's even offered. I used Sacramento airport on a trip to south side of Tahoe a couple years ago, but I wanted to visit more than one ski area and decided early on to rent a car. It's about a 100 mile trip. Believe frequent shuttle from Reno to Heavenly (about 50 miles) is pretty reasonable (~$40 rdtrp) if you can change your gateway airport.
rent a 4x4. You will want to have to use it and you will want to go to Kirkwood, Apline and Squaw which are all about an hours drive from south lake tahoe. Sac is alot cheaper to fly into but the drive with some snow will require a 4x4 or chains.
I agree with above. Fly in to Reno, Nv. If this isnt an option just rent an awd/4x4 car and count on at least a 2 hr drive from sacramento. Personaly, I like the car rental idea no matter where you fly to. I think you'll have more fun and more options, than being totally dependent on shuttles, buses and taxis.
Probably will fly into Reno and take the shuttle, I just don't want to mess with the car, too much hassle. They didn't mention if the shuttle buses are non-smoking (they are actually buses to the casinos)... We'll be staying downtown anyway. There is a Greyhound from Sacramento to Tahoe daily, but that's not going to work.
