When does ski season start?

I was planning a quick weekend at Timberline, just to remember what it's like to slide down snow, but it doesn't appear to be open. Anyone know when they're planning to open this year? Any other opening dates announced?

Timberline usually opens sometime in November. Early to Mid-November in good years, by Thanksgiving at the latest unless the fall is really dry/warm.

A-Basin's open, barely, from what I've read. Of course if you were going to do a quick weekend at Timberline, A-Basin's probably not in your neck of the woods.

Loveland has a wrod open too, as of this morning.

maybe i'm tripping, but it looks like Timberline is open Saturday and Sunday:

of course one could pick up the phone and call 'em to find out if/when they are open/opening...

i've found the general rule of thumb, however, at least here in Tahoe, is Thanksgiving. That's the target date. If resorts open prior to that they're stoked. if they open later than that they're bummed.

we don't really seem to have the rivalry that Loveland and A-Basin have in terms of being the first resorts to open, even if it's with a WROD.

currently I believe the earliest opening date here is mid-November, but after being in Tahoe last weekend they'll need some serious dumps and drops in temps for that to be a reality.

I'm going up there (Timberline) this weekend to scope it out and get our pics taken for our passes...

I wasn't planning on actually skiing, but I may have to throw the rock skis in the car, just in case.

Oh, and to answer the question: "When does ski season start?" When you start skiing.

That Timeberline conditions page says the Magic Mile Skyride is the only lift running. The Skyride is a non-skiing sight-seeing ride up and back down the Magic Mile lift. Ski operations haven't started yet.

^ah, thanks for clearing that up.

i know last year Timberline closed down for a few weeks in Sept. and then re-opened in Oct for skiing. i guess that must depend on the snow pack, eh?

Yeah, they always close down for at least a little while for annual maintenance, and when they open back up again depends on the early fall snow.

It's snowing this moment at Sierra at Tahoe.

Ski Season

AerOOO, where you from?

Inland PNW, everyone tries to open thanksgiving weekend and usually do.

The exception is Lookout Pass on the Idaho/Mt. border they will open earlier if have snow on the front side (N facing) or we'll hike up and take a run.

Sort of depends on where you are. Tahoe usually Boreal opens lst, lots of snow making and base is 7200 ft.
