An October Errand (Motorcycle)

Sunday October 14 and ski season is almost upon us. Today was clear and warm, and I had some wine to pick up at the Latcham winery, so I took the bike.

You know, sometimes when you get on the road, it just doesn't pay to turn around. I didn't do any wine tasting, but picked up the two bottles of Zin and stashed them in the saddlebags and headed up the hill. Heading deep into the foot hills through Omo Ranch toward Hwy 88, the smell of pine and smoke from controlled burns was pungent and mixed with the cool air to remind me that it is late in fall. And the mountains came into view.

I pulled into Kirkwood to see what is new there this year.

Snow pack has a way to go yet.

Chairlifts are ready!

So is the new Timber Ridge Condos and Sentennial West is well under way. There is a lot of construction, especially around the Timber Creek lift.

I think Kirkwood looks better from herel

Last year's dry winter has left Caples lake a mere shadow of its normal glory. The boat ramps are a long way from water.

Up high the fall color is nearly gone, replaced with the high snow and brown meadows.

Gratuitous motorcycle shot

Even down lower in Hope Valley, the color is going fast.

From the looks of things, this should be the last off-season trip report I submit this year. :

Nothing like a bike ride to take it all in.
