mwskier, i think the decision is based on supply and demand.
i think abasin and loveland open as early as possible because there are many who hadnt skied in 6 months that will pony up the money to ski on rocks in october and november.
however, when it gets into april and may, even though there is usually still great snow; not enoug skiers will come up to make it profitable to stay open.
It's purely marketing driven. A-Basin & Loveland know full well that they can not compete with the subsequent news flow of even their bigger neighbors, let alone the resorts further West that regularly report greater snowfalls. They get exclusive coverage for a month, and then slowly fade away into obscurity the rest of the season. Well worth the expense to get that free press. Only piece left in this annual ritual is to hear from Silverton, which always releases a mid-winter like photo that deceptively shows a skier/boarder making turns in seemingly deep snow. Oh wait, they already did that:
Carry on now with the suckerfest.
