Hunting is one thing, operating expenses another, FS permits - yet another reason...but as I understand it, ski areas also must purchase insurance for the times they will operate...I would have to speculate that they "guess" on opening and closing dates and then submit that time period to their insurance would be terribly inefficient for a ski area to pay for extra days/weeks of insurance should the weather not cooperate either on the front end or back end of the season...leaving you with the obligatory "late" openings and "early" closures.
