Yeah, money wasn't the final incentive... who is he kiddin'?
Just to throw in a counterpoint, I think there have been persistent rumors over the last two seasons that Bode was having a difficult time getting really comfortable on his Rossi's. The year before last, one additional completed race/win (particularly in slalom), would have won him the overall World Cup if I'm not mistaken.
While I certainly wouldn't doubt that the money was a major consideration, my impression is that Bode cares more about winning than money (to a certain point, anyway). Other than Bode, I don't think very many men won World Cup races on Rossi's last year.
So then you have the classic question - how much of the Austrian Men's Team's results can be assigned to the skis and how much to talent? I have a moderately good friend (who happens to have won an Olympic Gold Medal skiing on the Austrian Team), who says the skis are WAY more important today than they were 10 or 20 years ago.
If Bode thinks he'll be more competitive *and* get a boatload of money, why not? Sounds like a win/win.
As long as he wins races this season, of course.
