Volkl AC Motion - Impressions?

I noticed that Ski Press World raves and gives the 07/08 Volkl AC Motion (http://www.volkl.com/ski/unlimited_ac_motion.html ) top prize in its "Multi-condition - game improvement" category.

Two questions:

Anyone know anything about this ski? I know, I know -- it's an intermediate ski, not going to get much attention on Epic, but still, just asking.

Is there a comparable 06/07 model? Was the ski produced last year?

I searched Epic and found nothing, but maybe I missed it?

bump -- FYI -- Ski Press World's review of the Volkl AC Motion, as it's called, was off the charts. It was, I believe, the most highly rated ski of any ski reviewed this year in any category. Hence my interest, even if it is "only" an intermediate ski.

Well, it is probably no better than the rest of the AC line from volkl... Although - the footprint is strangely familiar to some motion skis of the past, so it could be an older "high end" footprint with the softer Motion interface on it. That would cause it to perform better than where it is rated in the line-up.

BTW Trot, I edited the spacing in your post so that it displayed properly.

Cheers for that! That's an interesting explanation. Do you think the review is probably overblown? Given those numbers, they make it sound like a nearly perfect ski.

I look at the numbers (scores) as being in the context of each category. It is unfair to compare the top scoring ski from the wide midfat category to the top scoring ski from the slalom carver category. So your question is more - how would it stack up against top performers from other categories? My thoughts are that it might compete, but I don't think you'd find it in the same league as the AC40 or AC30.

I think that skis in each category are scored based on the expectations of that category with relation to the other skis in the category. So... for example, an edgehold score of 86 for a slalom carver and an edgehold score of 89 for a midfat does not mean that the midfat has better edgehold. Rather it means that in their respective categories, the skis were in the Xth percentile for that given attribute.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured, too. But it really got those Ski Press testers excited tho, you know? They seemed to show no restraint when marking their scorecards, which makes me think, Wow, this MUST be an amazing ski, perhaps even capable of shining head-to-head with more performance-oriented skis.

I have the 06'/07' AC unlimiteds and they are quite remarkable. Excellent short turners, stable at speed, fat enough at the tip to float through crud and light powder while still holding edges on eastern hardpack. I had plateaued on my salamon verse 5's and the ACs let me advance more quickly than I have in any previous season. At this rate I will probably be buying AC40's next year I dont recall seeing any AC Motion on their site last year when researching.
