OT: Web site issues

I just received a heads up from a fellow Bear that our site was locking up with his browser. As a web site DIYer, I'm not entirely sure how to determine if it's an isolated or larger problem. I thought asking for help may be at least one avenue. So.....if others have had problems, or are up for checking it out for us we'd appreciate feedback, either here or privately.

(Maybe it's got 'graphic bloat' .

Many thanks for any help.

Terry, just logged on to your site. No problems here.

Clicking on your logo brought me to a site for 80 + basketweavers, with project plans and photos of the members.

Just kidding, it worked fine, browsers, Mac, Safari and Camino.

Terry-

Seems to be working okay for me, also.

Thanks guys.

Anyone on machines other than Mac and Mac browsers?

(SMj, I thought I hid one of my other sites. )

No Mac here but all is well and your site is loooooooooking goooooood.

To be sure, all from Epic should click on your logo and make sure there aren't any problems for anyone to visit your site.

The suspect is the left menu and possibly the header menu and interactive thermometer on the right.

So, is anyone else having problems with the menus?

Thanks!

Terry here is the message I sent you earlier, sounds like others are connecting OK..... Probably need to put this old home - built, wood - fired machine out to pasture and upgrade but....... think of the skis I could buy with that much $

Me again. I saw your post regarding my problem, I hope it's not just me or my machine creating a stir. I went to my fav list and deleted the link to your site which was strangely titled tools4boards? ? ? Then I re - booted, then I deleted my cookies,(maybe I should have re-booted then), then I did a new Google search, (found your Ebay link), then I opened your site again and the same thing...... It seems to open fine but when I click on something in the menu the little what-ever bar at the bottom starts counting down several hundred items downloading then I just get an hour glass on every thing except the close browser X and after that It says program not responding and I click end now and it shuts down. ? ? ? I have visited many other sites retailing gear lately with no problems. ? ? ? I guess that's all I can tell you - hope this helps.

Dave.

Dave,
If you are having problems, I'd bet others are as well. What percentage I can't guess or get input from someone who has far more knowledge on these issues than I. It's also possible (I'm guessing) that a tweak to your steam engine may needed anyway and maybe this exposed the need?

One thing I can check into is the menu developer's knowledge base on look there for possible known issues. Thanks for letting me know.

(Get a Mac & don't look back. )

mmm, difficult to replicate brokenness...gotta love that.

(i banged my head against osCommerce for a couple years...good times. just remind yourself of how great it is that you are learning a bunch of...erm...interesting PHP )

unable to find anything broken btw, looks smooth from here on Win/Mozilla

you do have your IP indexed for some reason at google, which could lead to them dinging you for duplicate content. i'd suggest looking for the offending backlinks there, and also setting your .htaccess up to 301 redirect all comers to www.slidewright.com. also maybe take a look at implementing one of the SEO URL contributions.

(Bug, broke or WAD (working as designed)? Try beta testing software for real joy. 'I think it's a bug or the premise you dreamed up behind the 'D' needs to be revisited.'.....response: "So.".

Thanks for the input & additional suggestions. The IP index issue just recently showed up and I haven't found it yet. I'll try via Google.

I think I know how to

I'm not entirely sure what

means.

http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/2823 would be one of the two popular ones.

They use mod_rewrite to change dynamic human unreadable urls to stuff like:
Code:
 www.slidewright.com/edge_tools/edge_and_bevel_tools/Ski_Man_quicksharp/
which will enhance your results for those deep product links showing up for keyword searches in search engines.

Seems fine to me, no problems. I don't know how to tell if this is a Flash menu or not, but I know one time when I used that type of menu system I got loads of complaints. Anyway, tested your site with IE 7.0 and Netscape 7.2 with no issues. There seems to be a bit of a lag when you click on the menu before the next submenu appears, though. Maybe they are impatient?

Alpinord,

The site pulls up for me on both Windows Internet Explorer 6.0 and Firefox 1.5 (based on Mozilla) on my XP system.

That being said, there are a few things that could be the issue- first his computer could have issues (has he done the usual things- cleared the browser cache and history, etc. -scanned for spyware and viruses)

But the other issue is that your site is using and requires Javascript to pull up the menus. Some turn off Javascript or block it due to the possible issues with the the scripts delivering possible spyware, or other bad code. If the browser or computer does not have the javascript enabled for his browser.

There are a few ways to handle this and troubleshoot the issue- but you have to know the questions to ask. (Or discuss this with the web site developer if you have one- they should be testing for various situations and browsers. I've sent a PM with a few links to check out.

I'm in Japan. Don't know my server, but I'll check again later at home. (my work server sucks.)

Anyway, I have layering issues on your home page. All the pics are overlapping. I've resized my browser, but that didn't make any difference.

Also, I love your interactive wax guide, but when I move my mouse over it, the menu options appear behind the guide. I can't read the menu when it comes up.

I'll check my mac and my windows machine at home later.

The opening page has some formatting problems that make the payment line overlap with the products being displayed.

Terry, do you have an all inclusive tuning kit? I get questions from people asking this stuff, and I don't want to give them a detailed list of everything they need to get. I clicked on that Deluxe Tuning kit in the upper right corner of the image above and got this not very helpful message... in fact I get that message for each of the first 3 items; the tuning kit, stand and 3 in 1 tool:

Sorry, this product is not currently available.

(Items with an '*' are available for ordering, but require lead time.
Typically 10-12 business days. Please check back for availability as inventory fluctuates.)

Nothing like tanking miserably in front of an audience on the the WWW.
(You're just going to have to upgrade to Macs. )

I fixed the links and not sure about the images and overlapping yet. It'll have to wait until next month, I guess....

Regarding the Tuning Kits, the New Tools4Boards SuperStation has just been added to the product line-up. We don't have any yet. If you need them now, you can order direct from Tools4Boards

Thanks for the input....obviously, I have a lot to learn to polish up the site, especially with the bells and whistles....One dumba$$ maneuver was to alter product IDs and not track down all of the links.

As a chronic DIYer, you can't be afraid to make mistakes......and learn by them.

Update: Just off the phone with RacerRick, owner of Tools4Boards in Calgary. The T4B SuperStations are in limited supply at present and will be more available over the next month as will be the improved Terminator tuning stands.

I forgot to mention the 'all-inclusive' options we have our several combos and we are open to suggestions on putting together other combos.
