mike i ,

Thank you for sharing the old movie. Those mountains are lovely. And the race was like watching a fun steeplechase.

Skiing sure wasn't about turning back then, was it? All these guys are practically straightlining down the hill!

Old tatran skiing looks like that. Very often was straightlining and fast.
First skitour had place in 1891 year. Wladyslaw Kleczynski and Marcin Kozlecki reach Czarny Staw Gasienicowy (Czarny Gasienicowy lake-this pleace appears in old movie in 8:01).This date is begining of skiing in The Tatras. Old skiers descent from many summits and passes e.g. Zadni granat- summit no1. Bronislaw Czech(He star in old movie) straight-lining ski descent before 2nd world war.

Gracias, really nice! Can you compare Tatras with another you've been to?

Thanks for the 1932 film, Mike. I thought it was poignant to watch, knowing that Hitler was on the horizon about to wreak havoc.

Gpaul I like Tatras the most. Mountains are like Alps but there are smaller and lower and there are no glaciers.
The Tatras form the central, highest and most beautiful section of the Carpatian mounitain range. They are ringed by four broad basins: Podhale, Orawa, Liptow and Spisz. The main Tatra ridge runs from west to east, about 51 kilometres as the crow files. In width, this whole chain is barely 18 km. It occupies an area of about 800 sq.km. The highest mountain in the Tatras is Gierlach (2654,4m), and there are dozens of other peaks rising to over 2000m. The Highest peak in the Polish Tatras is Rysy (2499,2m), but it's a border mtn. The highest polish peak is Kozi Wierch (2291,2m), whole mtn in Poland.
As regars type of landscape, geological structure and type of rock, the Tatras may be divided into three parts: the Western Tatras, the High Tatras and Bielskie Tatras. The most interesting part and the most frequented by tourists, is the High Tatras. One fifth of the entire Tatras area lies in Poland, valley of Rybi Potok, the most beautiful nook in the High Tatras, and the Dolina Koscieliska, the most lovely valley in the Western Tatras, are both situated in the Polish section of the Tatras.
The whole Polish Tatras area now constitues the Tatra National Park (TPN), whose equivalent on the Slovak side is the Tatransky Narodny Park(TANAP). They are covered by special regulations govering the behaviour of tourists in order to preserve the orginal fauna and flora of the Tatras.
The most popular parts of the Polish Tatras as follows: Morskie Oko, the most beautiful lake in Tatras, surrrounded by High peaks, Mt Kasprowy Wierch(1986,7m) reached by only high-mountain cable car in Poland. Kasprowy is skiing area with 2 ski lifts. The Picturesque Dolina Koscieliska valley with its karst forms and Mt Giewont (1894,5m) to towering over Zakopane. Zakopane is the town in the Tatras.

Excellent! Where is Warsaw re Tatras?

The Hotels and other accomodations seem very nice, and old. Are they modern by EU standards?

Is there a web site for skiing in the Tatras?

Longer and more accuracy information about Tatras from Tadeusz Ogorek's album" The Tatras exceptional mountains"

Zakopane is in the south Poland, Warsaw is central. From Warsaw to Zakopane is quite long distance (400km). Better way to get there is from Cracow(100km).There are some hotels in Zakopane. Some of them are very comfortable. http://www.zlotehotele.pl/mercure_ka..._zakopane/eng/
Next to hotel is skilift called Szymoszkowa http://www.szymoszkowa.pl/index.php?lang=en

That old Polish video is great, it's like Warren Miller meets Sergei Eisenstein.

I was hoping to try to translate the sub-titles but alas, babelfish doesn't do Polish.
