Review: Freeskier Magazine Buyer's Guide

Why do I buy this thing year after year? Severe late summer ski jones? Gotta blame something I suppose.

The Good
- Cover photo of somebody actually skiing in snow. Last year's buyer's guide cover featured a 10 year old in clothes 3 sizes too big with his pant cuffs clamped into his heelpieces grinding a rail - no snow in sight.

- They tested at Solitude. Last year they tested at Vail. Any ski test which took place at Vail requires a suspension of disbelief.

- Nice pics of every ski. After all, this is really the only good reason to buy any buyer's guide. There's even a fold out in the middle with an additional picture of every ski tested.

The Bad

- the first 1/4 of the magazine is nothing but two-page ad after two-page ad. The rest of the mag is only an ad every other page.

- the dumb teen-beat-esqu "sponsored skier" profiles are back - this year many of them take up an entire page. Who cares?

- the reviews are typically very very vague. That said, they are better than Powder.

- no reviews of the Head 105, 4frnt EHP 193 or K2 Coomba. Really -wtf???

- the Salomon Rocker is referred to twice as a "reverse-camber" ski. It's not. It has tip rocker and normal camber in the tail.

- reviews of non-ski crap like i-Phones and snowmobiles. Actually the snowmobile reviews are the most in-depth reviews in the entire magazine. Maybe they should change the name to "Freesledder".

- outerwear reviews featuring ridiculously baggy park crap exclusively. Guess fasion really does trump form.

Random Comments

- killer pic of Ryan Moore tail-gunning at Solitude! There's really not enough tail-gunning in today's mags.

- the first anywhere-near-positive review of the Fischer 207.

Summary

Are a bunch of pictures of skis and 100 pages of ads really worth $6? I guess my vote is yes.

More The Bad

- 4Frnt EHP 186 has a reverse-sidecut. Ummm....no, it doesn't.
