I was told that the pivot slip drill taught students to pivot. If thats the case then the movements should be the same. Yet I don't see those movement in the race vid.
What does it mean to pivot?
BigE was close, I know what he meant...JASP picked up this too...so starting over here it is:
Pivot slips is simply an EXERCISE used to teach the basic SKILL of PIVOTING as defined by the CSIA.
This should NOT be intrepreted to say it is used to teach the MOVMENT PATTERN of pivoting as defined by the CSIA. This is becuase the CSIA (and PSIA too, I believe) does not teach movment patterns, but rather they teach SKILLS.
So PIVOTING as defined by the CSIA means this:
The turning (either actively or passivley) of the femurs within the hip sockets such that the legs ROTATE while the HIPS stay still. Nothing more, nothing less.
Pivot slips are used as a basic tool, to teach this SKILL of being able to turn the femurs in the hip sockets. That is it.
Now, PIVOTING as defined above is NOT skiing....it is NOT a technique...it IS simply one of 5 (as defined the CSIA) core skills to skiing effectivley. Hence when the other 4 skills (Stance and Balance, Edging, Pressure Control, Timing and Coordination) are thrown in as well, and they are being blended to together skillfully, as done by WC Skiers, HH, the SVMM ski guy, myself
....and dare I say it, yes even you Max...it can be hard to see to the untrained eye....but in the WC video in question it really really easy to see....in the SVMM video it also easy to see...but what is also easy to see in these to videos is the carving action as well.....pivoting and carving blended is STEERING...
On aside...the air in between the turns is not from the ski rebound...ie unloading a bent ski...it is from the virtual bump...in a few cases this is likely compounded by crossing the ruts left by skiers who were not steering as effectivley as this guy was....on the WC the guys try to realeae the skis energy in the fall line so that it shoots the skiers mass across the hill to the next gate...if they realease too late, the skis release and send the skier back up the hill...and that is SLOW...keep the mass moving down the hill is the goal....
