Kirkwood does not have a double diamond post/sign on their trail.

Well the Minarets gave it away. Must be spring. What's my prize? How about a free day lift ticket to Mammoth:.

they substitue the skull & crossbones signs instead. it makes for a better picture for people to pose in front of and then ski around

I will post pics of people skiing down said chute in a latter post

Here ya go!
During a big blow.
Contributes to vertigo

Looks to me like there would be avalanche danger on this picture? Isn't the snow drifting off the edge of the chute?
The problem is minor breaking and sloughing of the cornice combined with vertigo from not being able to see the landing zone. The wind was creating a slab, but it was being skied pretty hard. Click on the pic to enlarge.

It ain't always bluebird or spring conditions. Sometimes the drifts on this ridge are nearly impassible to reach a line.

dude what i would give to get out of NY and ski down a mountain like that. Even just for an hour.

If you ever get a chance you gotta do it. I snowboarded where these guys are standing. Awesome. Nothing in the NE even comes close to it.

dropping in from about where those guys (person in yellow) are standing in the top pic:

ugh, I loathe that feeling. i'll freely admit i'm a huge wuss and pretty much avoid open spaces and head for the trees when I can in that kind of situation.

You have to love the sign... right?

The sad thing about that sign is that it gets used at less scrupulous Eastern resorts by the marketing department instead of those concerned with safety such as patrol.

Then eastern gapers go West and die...since the sign didn't mean jack in NY, why would it mean anything in Ootah or Cali?

It generally doesn't mean much at KW either. It's the yellow "Caution Cliff" of "Danger Cliff" signs that people need to pay attention too (and then make their own call whether they're attracted to or repulsed by such a sign )

i think i've skied down that run at Mammoth (if it's Climax)...if it's right as you get off the lift and to the right of the staircase.

if it's the chute further down (Hangman's Hollow/MJB's) by the groomed bomber run off the top (Cornice), then no, i haven't skied it, but i watched MTT and a bunch of other borderline snow-psychos dodge some rocks and crud to squeeze through it.
