This is so true and so sad. Living in the midwest, I rarely get to ski in deep, soft powder and it is magical. Locally, most skiers haven't experienced it. You can tell when you talk to them about it.
When I go west, and I find those magical conditions, it is an depressing early morning stampede. By late morning, you are left hunting for stashes in the trees. The conception of savoring the moment is too brief. I know I will be doing backcountry skiing in the near future because deep resort powder is almost as rare as first tracks. And the locals always get to good stuff first. Oh well....
One can debate equipment, but for me, I will trade it all for a real powder day. On any ski, I will be happy.
Inbounds the one time she was over in LCC she had 183cm Gotamas. I was refering to her AK skis to make the point better. In Push she is clearly using 190cm Sumos whens she's getting on the heli.
