Gag Me - ABC's New Year's segment on skiing

I just had on "ABC 2002" to get into the New Year's spirit (while recording OLN races on the Replay). Peter Jennings cut to Deer Valley, and Olympic freestyle ski trials. Charles Gibson, that font of serious journalism, was making a total a@@ of himself.

He kept standing dead center in front of the course, blocking seeing the jumps. All he kept repeating was "Nailed It!" every time somebody did not fall (which was all the time of course), and "kids are great". These kids are so inspiring. Isn't it great, Mitt Romney, that all thesekids are coming to Utah. I just love to watch these kids.

Geez, could he be more patronizing? How about "these skilled athletes" or "these young men and women" once in a while?

Now this was NOT a sportscast, it was a 3-minute segment in their program of New Years events around the world. But I think they could have at least bought a clue about the event.

Of course next they cut to the Vatican. For 12 seconds. The Pope (a good skier back in the day himself) was presiding at a service, but before you could even get a sense of where he was (was it a Mass, where in the Mass were they, or was it a homily for New Years), Jennings comes on with the voice over, "It's always nice on New Years to go to the Vatican for a few seconds".

Cut to commercial.

Man, I shouldn't complain that ABC dissed the skiers - they even dissed the Pope!

More Americans get their news from the Walt Disney Company* than from any other source

*owners of ABC - my variant on the ABCNews tagline.

LOL! I saw that too! Quickly switched the channel, opened a bottle of wine (Elk Cove (OR) Pinot Gris), sliced some cheese and now I'm waiting for Seinfeld to come on - that will me MY New Years Celebration.

I do have a bottle of Argyle (OR) Champagne (25% Pinot Noir & 75% Chardonnay) saved for later that I will share with a girlfriend.

Safe and sane - hope yours is the same.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Mark and Sugar

Both of you make me feel "normal". Where else would a skier be on New Year's except complaining about the lack of good TV programming.

It's early bed time for me (wife rolls me over for the Ball - um, no comment)'cause I always go skiing the next day.

OMG!! I am so happy! I was almost going to post a topic asking if anyone else is saving $ that can be used for skiing by NOT going out for New Years!
i thought everyone would think we were weird!
What is weird is that two in the same household seem to be able to post at the same time. Do the two of you ever talk (or maybe not after the new boots)

At just about the same time, I opened a bottle of champagne after Lisa sliced something else - her finger! <font color="red">oouch!</font>

Yeah, bunch of skiiers hanging 'round wishing it was a long skiing getaway. I got stuck on-call for my programming team, so I have to be close to home anyway.

(well I [b]did</d> take that three-week summer vacation and went skiing at Blackcomb for Canada Day, so I really shouldn't grouse about working once in a while...)

So Happy New Year (now that we're all finished bandaging!)

About to switch back to OLN to watch the Men's downhill from Bormio and pretend that I didn't take a chicken-shallow-line when doing the Stelvio there.

I have to say an early (EST) "Happy New Year" to all you nuts so I can go to bed so I can get up and go to work at the ski hill in the morning.

Happy New Years! Everyone! Love you all!!
Hey! Didn't those balloons they were holding at Times Square look like skis?

I'm here too.

Watching videos -- my favorites. Mad Max, now The Godfather. I'll be putting in Part 2 next.

Jeez. I can't get OLN on AT&T cable. Bastards.

Happy New Year

SCSA,

That's a drag you can't get OLN on AT&T Cable. I would have figured that since Colorado is full of the corporate HQs of several Cable and Satellite companies, you'd have the best selection out there.

Here in Boston on Cablevision - oops sold out to AT&T - oops just sold out to Comcast, we don't have it on the analog cable either.

One of the reasons why I have Dish Network instead. Dish has it on channel 151. DirecTV also has it.

AT&T/whoever just rolled out digital cable in our neighborhood. They do carry OLN on that, so I'd think that perhaps you might be able to get it if you can get their digital tier.

Otherwise go give hometown Littleton boy Charlie Ergen some business and sign up for Dish. Or Direct - he's buying that. DBS has its downsides, but overall it's a much better buy than cable IMHO. I keep a "lifeline" cable $9/mo plan for my local channels (get more than what Dish has for $6) but rarely watch them unless a major local news story is happening. Meanwhile I watch KWGN in Denver all the time!

Get a Dish out there while the season's still on. World Cup, Skiers World, Gear Guide, lots of good stuff on OLN.

Combine that with a Replay (or TiVo if you prefer) and you don't even have to worry about which box or remote you use for which channel - the PVR combines all the different signal sources and channel lists into one integrated setup. Makes it "family-friendly" which is otherwise a downside of satellite/local mixes. Then just tell it to have a "Theme" of "Skiing" - and it goes and finds all the race coverage and similar for you automatically. Always some ski program on TV whenever you want.

You're a true geek, SCSA - you'd love this stuff. Probably have it voice-controlled in a day! You deserve a New Year's Present
:

Happy New Year!

Just got back from a party at 47th & 9th... a few blocks from Times Square. Everyone was relieved at midnight when there was no nuclear explosion.

My cat Blackcomb is now sitting in front the the TV swatting the downhill skiers at Bormio.

True to his name, the TV that turns him on is Skiing, instead of that dumb Cat Video

Happy New Year everyone.

Earlier made the comment about skiing today. Actually it was going to be boarding to get ready for my Level 1 on Sat/Sun.

Just don't feel right today (no drinks is what might have caused it?).

Going to a PSIA ski clinic Thur/Fri before the board exam, and just figure, enough is enough (Don't shot me!)

Something doesn't feel right. Maybe FEAR of boarding on novice runs so close to 4 days on the hill...

There are crazy skiers/riders out there...

Well, going to curl up in bed with a good book, and start the year off right, by being lazy!!!

Nice Mark.....I was gagging at Gibsons milque toast superfluous puke too. Just a preview of the fluffy crap that will send us into rants during NBC's miniseries approach to sports coverage.
I never go out on "Amateur Night"....of I am a friend of Bill's.

I was one of about 15,000-20,000 people sitting up in the bleachers there at Deer Valley watching the aerials comp. I have to say that being there watching it was really inspiring stuff. You can feel the momentum building and it's too bad that ABC screwed up their coverage because being there, I felt that it was totally about the athletes competing and even though the on-hill announcers were a bit over the top, they still only added to the excitement!

Maybe it'll come off better on the actual segments that they have taped for later - then again mayve not!

sphrrt - glad to hear it was so good in person. The aerials looked great - what little I could see of them. I'm hoping the whole comp gets shown on OLN or ESPN or somewhere.

Robin - yes, I am so NOT looking forward to what NBC is going to do to screw up the coverage. We'll probably be seeing a 30 minute special on Sarah Schlepper's home life (not to dis Sarah) because she's a photogenic blonde American, while they don't show any skiing from Laure Pequegnot or Janica Kostelic. Can't let the competition get in front of the "up close and personal" profiles of Americans.

Almost makes me want to go up on the roof, repoint the dish at Bell ExpressVu Canada's satellite, and order up one of those "grey market" receivers with a bogus Canadian address so I can get some real coverage.

You'd think with all the bandwidth the GE-MS-NBC media conglomerate has between NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, PAX, and other channels, they'd reserve one for "all competition all the time" coverage.
From the tripe they broadcast to the blue headed ladies watching non-stop figure skating....don't hold yer breath.
The only way a skier will even get an up-close and personal is if Dad 's dying of cancer...otherwise it's Michele Kwans's favorite ice cream.
Just like sphrrt, i was also at the event in person. Couldn't of enjoyed it any better.
ABC will have this on tv Jan 13th,11am Mt. time.

I couldn't make it to Deer Valley to watch the Aerials,my wife got sick so we stayed home i did see Charlie Gibbson and your right he was "Over the Top" with his "He nailed it" over and over again. However in his defence, Gibbson is an avide skier, I have seen him ski a few times at Deer Valley and he is pretty good. He has or at least Had a ski in and ski out Home in Deer Valley for a number of years.
Anyway I already got my first turns in for 2002.I made it to the chair a little after 10 am, a lot and I mean a lot of the lifties looked vary hung over this morning.Happy New Year Everyone!

Mark, I didn't watch any TV last night -- played my Deus Ex game on the computer, and then watched the Benigni movie "The Monster" -- but if I saw that danged ABC stuff, I'd be ranting right along with you.

You are spot-on with the deal about "photogenic Sarah Schleper." Nevermind that Sarah isn't the best racer OR the best-looking racer. Wouldn't want any European lovelies (both in looks and in racing ability) upstaging little Miss Deadhead!! After all, retro-hippie chic is SO today!

grrrrrrrr... what we all get for having tastes higher than the "average 8th grader," who is the reference point for all entertainment and news on the big media.
