Can anyone identify this Big Mountain chute?

Thread Starter
I was wondering if any Big Mountain/Whitefish locals could identify this chute for me. Primarily, I wanted to tell some friends that there is some steep stuff there and it's not all low expert trees.

I though it might be NBC from the map....but there are quite a few double diamonds in that area on the map.

Thanks.

I believe (but not 100% sure) it is NBC. My kids and I skied this 4 or 5 times one particular day on a trip to Big Mountain a LONG time ago. I've got a picture of this somewhere but it is a printed picture I'd have to first find and then scan.

I think the second pic is North Bowl Chute as well. It looks like something that was posted on their website this year. I've never had the guts to go down it, tho. I've seen NBC from Moose, but not any closer.

Here's another double black, Big Horn:

Plenty more pics here (but no more pics of double blacks):

Jan 8 pics (real nice)

Sib,

Those are some really sweet pics! Love the panoramic shots. Makes me want to get the skis, pack the bags and head west today!!

But not as cheap as Discovery. Those pictures remind me of the backside there.

Took a look at those back areas....are they all really double blacks?

The runs in the two bowls serviced by the Limelight Chair at Discovery are all true double diamonds. Almost every one of them has at least one section that is steeper than anything I've skied on named runs at Big Sky & Bridger Bowl.

Thanks for posting.

Does Kirkwood really look like that?? Wow!!

Really enjoyed the pics! Thanks!

So, Big Mountain is now Whitefish Ski Resort? Why?

Went there a couple of years ago for New Years week. Absolutely ridiculously cold, but had a great time!

You can read all about that issue here. Basically, they thought that the name was too generic and we were getting confused with Big Sky. I imagine that last season when BS was having trouble opening and we were at 100% that became a real irritant. People don't realize we're 6 hours north and on the other side of the Divide. This will help us with the identity problem.

Altho....I'd rather we were still a secret.

Good Skiing

Sibhusky, nice pics.

Whitefish looks like Kirkwood - Oh no it doesn't. They both great areas but very different.

I haven't been to this mountain since I was about 12 (9 years ago) but I can tell you when I was there I accessed it through the east rim by staying high and far left after going through the gate

Wow, nice thread bump!

Yes, you'd head down the Ant Hill on the right side, giving Moe-mentum a miss and heading thru the gate ahead of you then cutting to the left instead of following the ridge.

In the view of that ridge below, you'll see a dip with fewer trees on it relative to the rest of the line of the ridge and I think that is where NBC is accessed.  I normally go down the side you see here.  I just don't have views of the back that I can find easily that show it.  I have one view of the other side (below) but it's not the half that has NBC on it.

I think that may be First Creek, not NBC. both equally challenging runs though.

Fun run, whatever it's called. Here are some shots I took last year:

Very much looking forward to skiing the 'fish again next month :)

Really?  I thought First Creek was accessed just a bit further along, getting to the trees and then cutting in.  Not sure how you would get to the dip I referred to from that entrance, it seems like you'd have to go up hill.  But....Sibby stays away from both of them.  My daughter, on the other hand....

Martin, 1st pic, is that a kid in there? Wow nice job.

at first i thought it was North Bowl Chute, but looking at the trail map, First Creek is further up the ridge( closer to Dons Descent) than NBC. i think NBC is in the area with the rock bands and drops littered all over it. One of the snow ambassadors at Big Mtn once told me that it was First Creek in that area, and that most people get East Rim Confused with NBC. So im not sure. its one of those 2 runs though.

AND part of Stephen Malkmus' Real Emotional Trash was recorded in Whitefish. Just sayin'.
