Car Rental Recommendations @ SLC

Thread Starter
So, we are traveling for the first time to PC/DV & The Canyons in late Dec. We decided to rent a van, as there are 7 of us, and we figure the cost would be comparable to the shuttle - and our condo is about 1/4 - 1/2 mile to the bus system.

Anyone have some decent recommendations? Anyone ever rent from Affordable Car Rental or Rent a Wreck? Just curious - the downside is that they both can arrange shuttles to their offices but weekends are considered "their closed" time - but would still accomodate us. That worries me. Just looking around right now - Have a reservation through Thrifty, but looking for a better deal.

Thanks guys!

My personal recommendation is to stick with the "big boy" rental companies; I have had some interesting adventures with smaller rental companies. The major car rental companies have their car pick up/drop off at the airport, and it is literally a 200 foot walk from baggage claim. I always book my car rentals through Orbitz -- they seem to have the best rates, and they list all the majors. If you join whatever member club yhe rental company has, you can often get an additional driver (at least a spouse) on the rental for free.

Be aware that car rentals in SLC (and many airports for that matter) add on fees that can account for about 20% on top of the rental fee.

Finally, I believe that PC has pretty good mass transit -- maybe others can comment on this. If you are confining yourself to Park City, then you may not need a car -- you mat want to compare the cost of shuttles to Park City against a van rental.

Others amy chime in -- good luck!

Yeah, that would worry me too! Would they still accommodate you if your flight was three hours late? Something that is all too common nowadays. I would stick to a major that has a desk at the airport.
I've used Thrifty at SLC many times and they've always been good.

Has anyone heard of Rugged Rental at SLC airport? They seem to have good rates. They may have large vehicles too?

Father-in-law rented from Rent a Wreck once to move my then girlfriend's stuff across the state. It broke down in the middle of the drive and left them stuck on the side of the highway until I got there to give them a ride.

Could it be cheaper to rent two smaller cars than one van?
Or if you're on really low budget and won't be doing much additional driving, you could rent one smaller car and make two trips from airport to get all to PC area?

Car rental story: I rented a dodge charger at nice price for a recent trip with 2 adults + 3 kids to CO. Brought all our own ski/'snowboard gear. The rental guy brought the car up to the curb next to us and then gasped at our mountain of waiting equipment and bags. Fortunately, he freely obliged us by switching to a dodge magnum (station wagon) which held a lot more gear and saved the day. The cost of the charger/magnum was about a third of a minivan.

I have been out to SLC/PC three times now and have rented every time. We like to go to different resorts and depending one the weather, one local may be better then the other.

I cannot remember the rental company, it may have been Advantage, but the cars were off site and you had to take the shuttle to the rental location. Not a huge deal, but I failed to check the hours and we had an early flight and needed to drop it off and then wait for the shuttle to get back to the airport. It was not worth the discount. I would recommend calling the companies to make sure the cars are at the airport. The web sites can be vague about the actual location of the cars.

We had a group of 5 of us last time in PC and we rented 2 cars. It worked out well if people wanted to split up on trips or leave early if we were over at LC/BC canyon.

Alamo in SLC (off airport) left me waiting for three hours after turning in the car for a shuttle to the terminal. Almost missed my flight. Never again.

I have used Hertz, Alamo and Dollar in SLC on many occasions. Hertz is usually the best where ever I go (but of course, you pay for it!).

Dollar is almost always the cheapest. Their cars have always been great and they frequently upgrade me. The women at the Dollar desk @ the SLC airport, though, often are difficult to deal with.

I've used Rugged Rental twice in the past two seasons; they've been quite good, and a little cheaper than the nationwide outfits for SUVs.

Check out the price of TWO cars vs. one minivan.

You might come out ahead. PLUS having more flexibiility.

I checked out Rugged Rental's and came up with a cool quote on a Hummer H3 for about $560 for 7 days during Feb.

NEVER use ACE (in Los Angeles, don't think in SLC). And I MEAN never.

Luckily I used Amex and they kicked Ace's butt royally!
